Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

Interview and Q&A with Rothman yesterday said he [Sony] is actively chasing a Best Picture win. This might be it. Sony/Columbia hasn't had one since The Last Emperor (1987) though it leads all studios with 12.

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

This would be amazing if it happens :

I'm still in awe of his work in Magnolia and have often wondered what his career would have been if he stayed doing films like that instead of exclusively action flicks.

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

I've been relistening to the Harmontown podcast and IIRC in one of the eps I listened to recently Dan talks about a guy who wrote movie reviews for porn mags back in the 80s. It didn't occur me until I saw this thread bumped, but I wonder if it's this same guy.

Oh, and I agree that Tom Cruise in a Tarantino film would be amazing.

Tom Cruise would kill it in a juicy role like this.

The (hear-say) article says Cruise is trying to manage his schedule to take "a small role", not the lead.

True, but you know QT ain’t gonna have him play something boring or regular charming Tom Cruise.

Tarantino has decided not to go forward with this movie: https://deadline.com/2024/04/quentin...ed-1235888577/

I don't understand his whole I can only make 10 films schtick. Ridley Scott, Marty, and Eastwood are making decent films in their 80s.

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

The plot of that new Fantastic Voyage movie should be that a group of scientists are shrunk and inserted into Tarantino's ass so they can remove his head before he suffocates.

Especially since Kill Bill Vol 1, 2 and Four Rooms already muddle his count. As far as I'm concerned, he's already made his tenth film.

I heard from The Ringer's Sean Fennisey that he had read the script for this and it was awesome. What a shame.

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

That’s surprising. I thought Tarantino was a good way through the pre-production of this.

Not that the premise was super interesting to me but Tarantino can write pretty interesting movies with lackluster concepts.

Hopefully he'll still publish the screenplay.

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

Ugh. This dumb self-imposed "10 movie" rule. It's going to take QT 10 years to decide what movie to finish on, so he goes out with a bang.

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

It would be one thing if he was correct about people being worse at directing as they age, but that’s not necessarily the case. I suspect he’s specifically thinking of someone like Howard Hawks where he may personally prefer the front half of his career to the back half.

Also the people who made only a few movies didn’t necessarily plan to do so. Someone like Kubrick would have continued with A.I. and possibly more had he lived.
There are also a number of older directors in the business today that don’t go around talking about limits and have around the same or less movies than Tarantino.

David Lynch who actually has done ten movies and wants to do one more now, which fans would gladly see. People (including me) watched him pull random numbers from a box and do daily weather reports, of course we’ll take a new movie.

There’s James Cameron who has made the same or less movies with a longer career. Although he has three more on the way.

George Lucas also only has six movies as a director, and half of them people hate. He kept talking about doing smaller features after the prequels which never happened. I doubt Tarantino will be citing his track record as an influence.

I would be happy if he turned it into a book. I greatly enjoyed the One Upon a Time in Hollywood novelization. (And this whole "10 films" thing is really dumb.)

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

I've said it from the beginning when he announced it......there's no way he's stopping at 10 films. While the news of this film being cancelled doesn't really change that, I still believe he will make many more films.

Seems like he had a late mid-life crisis or something that he's now pulling out of.

I agree. The Tarantino of today will not be the same Tarantino when he’s 70 and his experiences can change his opinion. For example he might want to make a kids movie (or more likely an R rated movie that he feels is still appropriate for kids) when his children are 10 or something so they get to see him work. Or something else aligns and an idea comes to mind.

Re: The Movie Critic (D: Tarantino)

History is filled with film critics who aspired to be filmmakers. Tarantino seems like the one filmmaker who aspires to be a critic. Afterall, his films are mostly just him commenting on and recontextualizing other films. Writing affords far more freedom to do that and in a way that doesn't involve mounting some massive production every 5 or so years. I could totally see him never making another movie again, especially if he knocks the next one out of the park. The problem is that Once Upon a Time's shadow looms large and I wonder if trying to live up to that one (which I think is his masterpiece) will make a truly satisfactory follow up almost impossible.

Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood really feels like it could/should have been his final film. To me it felt like the culmination of everything Tarantino loves about Hollywood and filmmaking.

I’m not a fan of the 10 film thing either. Mostly because I’d love to see Tarantino cover other genres. I’d love to see him make another crime drama like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I’d like to see him try a murder mystery “Whodunit”, I’d like to see a Polanski type horror like Rosemary’s Baby, etc.
