Unforgiven is tops for me and I really really liked Open Range. I would also include Lonesome Dove. And Deadwood is probably my favorite Western show.

I don't like the spaghetti westerns all that much and I really disliked the Tarantino westerns.

One that I have always enjoyed but not mentioned here is Quigley Down Under.

Of the older ones The Searchers is really poweful.

A movie comprised of a series of perfect scenes set to perfect music. Even the fact that it's all dubbed doesn't hurt it.

There are a lot of other Westerns that I love, but no other as much as this one.

Currently revisiting The Quick and the Dead. My favorite Western? I dunno. But it sure is one of my favorites, and one hell of a ride.

Man I use to hate western when I was a kid.
but as an adult I been impressed by quite a few

3:10 to Yuma (the remake) is the one that showed me the genre was more than shooting Indians.

You know which movie feels like a western but I guess it can’t be. Because it takes place in the present. “Hell or High Water” hands down the best movie from that year

^ A lot of critics refer to Hell or High Water as a modern/present-day Western. Movies like Lone Star, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and Logan also fall under that category.

Tombstone, the original 3:10 to Yuma, Unforgiven, and the Coens' True Grit have already gotten a lot of love so I'll mention a relatively obscure one: 1955's The Violent Men starring Glenn Ford, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson. It has a familiar set up with a retired cavalryman (Ford) looking to pull up stakes and move back East. But he hesitates when men from Anchor Ranch (the biggest one in the area) get aggressive in their attempts to take over other properties.

The Violent Men has all the beats familiar to fans of the genre, but it has a few twists up its sleeve so it'll keep you guessing who's going to make it to the end credits. The movie also has an amazing montage of a band of riders storming the valley where the movie is set and razing everything in sight.

I knew there was something major I was forgetting. If I'd remembered, this would have definitely been in my list. As you say, it's aces across the board!

Speaking of those, How the West was Won fits that criteria as well. I haven’t seen it listed here yet but it’s like the Western equivalent of a warm, comfy, blanket!

I just finished Old Henry. I was pretty impressed by the time it was over. Fantastic little movie!

I just watched Unforgiven for the first time in almost thirty years.

I remember watching it back when I was in high school, and didn't see what all of the fuss was about. Decent enough movie.

Still sort of feel the same way. I think that a lot of the deconstructionist elements kind of went over my teenaged head by not being a particular fan of the western genre and having been raised in the 80s on the idea of anti-heroes (Dirty Harry, Wolverine, The Punisher, Rambo, etc) and morally gray heroes.
