After watching the trailer, it doesn't look good. Well, let me clarify, it doesn't look good for big budget theatrical production from a major studio. If this were a fan film, I'd think it looks good. But that's the problem. It looks like the trailer for a well produced fan film.

I feel like, without even considering the cost of making this remake, just re-releasing the original in theaters would net more profit.

1994 Lion King $981,708,285
2019 Lion King $1,662,020,819

Now update the original to consider inflation between 94 and 2019.

But it's also not a good comparison. The Lion King remake was still CGI. I don't see young kids wanting to see this as much as they would the animated original (assuming they never saw it.)

The original HTTYD could be released tomorrow and feel brand new to modern kids.

The original Lion King could not.

That spot, and the previous teaser, get me pumped... to watch the original animated movie instead.

It's weird. When the original animated movie was made, much was said about how the animators and lighting artists consulted with live action cinematographers to give the animated feature a "real" look, despite its cartoony characters designs. And yet the live action film has the flat, sterile, and artificial look of many modern productions. It's what makes this all look like a cheap fan film, despite the obvious large budget of the production. It's like an offshoot of the Uncanny Valley, that is caused by the real elements rather than the CGI.

Bump

Opens this week. Expected to pull in big numbers. I plan to see it tomorrow. night. I never watched the animated movies. I know they are on Peacock. I should get on that.

Right now it's 77% on RT with a 99% audience score
