Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 5 (2026)
Animated sequels to Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia are in the works, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced on today’s Q1 earnings call.
“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia,” Iger said. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

Soooo, with Woody gone, I wonder where the story goes from there? I mean, I think most agree that Toy Story 3 was a perfect capper. 4 wasn't horrible if not necessary. But 5?

This series needs to stop with either separating Woody and Buzz for most of the movie, or incapacitating Buzz and turning him into an idiot for most of the movie. This was fine the first time in Toy Story 2, but got really old when they did it two more times.
Going back to a Woody and Buzz buddy team-up would be great, if this is a “one last time” thing but I’m sure there will be more.

You know it won’t be the last time is the issue because Disney doesn’t know when to stop. Toy Story 3 was the perfect stopping point really. Then Toy Story 4 came along and while still decent was unnecessary.
If Woody is gone it’ll be weird seeing a new one. After the end of the last one I’m not sure how you’d reunite the toys easily.

Disney is going to continue to milk Toy Story and Frozen for all it's worth. Like others have already said, Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to the series. 4 was not need. I don't think anyone believes Woody would leave the toys after everything that they have been through together. My daughter watched Frozen 2 and didn't care for it. I never heard a lot of people talking about it.
I wish Disney would come up with new ideas instead of rehashing the movies that have already been made.

Bob Iger basically said in an earnings call that until new ideas (new IP) starts making money like old ideas (existing IP), you will keep seeing sequels to things.

To be fair, those new ideas have to hit theaters in order to make money. Bringing Turning Red directly to Disney+ was a horrible mistake.

One thing that would break new ground is if the toys talked to Andy for real at the end. Break their rules and somehow reveal themselves and tell him what he meant to them over the years. Would be kind of extreme, like Bruce Wayne announcing he’s Batman to the world, but at least it’s not the same old situation.

Disney hasn't had a major hit since "Toy Story 4". Of course they are going to go back to the well.

Disney badly needs the cash infusion of predictable sequels to their major titles. They took on a ton of debt buying Fox and the pandemic decimated their parks business.
The bad news is these sequels are being driven only by financial considerations and not creative ideas. Do I think they had a brilliant idea for Toy Story 5 in mind when making this announcement? No, it's a string of box office failures which has got us to this point. That is not a good recipe for success.

But this isn't like these sequels are coming out this year or even next year. They are all probably 2+ years away. Not exactly an immediate cash infusion.

For immediate release: In the world of Toy Story, we've seen many Buzz Lightyears, but there's only been one Woody. Until now. While traveling with Bo Peep and his newfound carnival friends, helping toys find loving homes, Woody is shocked to see his former owner, Andy, now all grown up. Andy is with his family, including his young son holding his very own Woody doll. When Andy buys a vintage Woody to give to his son to make new memories, the old Woody wonders what this new home and generation of love and play could be like. Meanwhile, Buzz and the group have retired to a place of honor on the shelf of a loving teenage Bonnie. It's not the same as playing everyday, but they do have a wonderful view out the window to a new family moving in next door: Andy's family. Toy Story 5 is slated for May 2, 2025 release.

Andy, now a young professional, living and working on his own for the first time on his life, is suddenly and unexpectedly drawn back to his home town following the news of his mother’s untimely death. Once home, Andy begins experiencing nightmares and disturbing visions of toys coming to life and speaking to him. Believing he’s losing his mind, Andy turns to Sid his one-time childhood neighbor. Sid, who’s spent much of his life in and out of jail and mental institutions is now working the occasional odd job around town and hosting his own conspiracy theory podcast. He’s been trying to convince the world of talking toys for almost 30 years. Together Andy and Sid break into Al’s Toy Barn, which has been shuttered since the late 90s due to its owner being imprisoned in a federal penitentiary for theft and international racketeering charges, to discover the truth about Andy’s disturbing visions. This may finally vindicate Sid after all these years and, quite possibly, discover the true killer of Andy’s mother…

I was hoping for Pixar’s first dark psychological thriller.

Toy Story 4 lost me. 3 was incredible. They’re going to bleed this thing completely dry. To absolutely no one’s surprise.

Sure, "Toy Story 4" was absolutely not needed, but I loved it. All four of the films have been great IMO. With #2 being the crown jewel for me. It was just the perfect movie.

So based on that teaser (or title reveal, really), they got none of the voices locked in?

I don’t understand how Woody is back with the group after the ending of Toy Story 4. I’ve liked all the movies to date but wish they would stop. The third one was really the perfect ending in my opinion.
