The officially licensed Godzilla Minus One shirts are back on sale at Cavity Colors. They were pretty much sold out, but I guess the demand was really high.

re: Godzilla Minus One (2023, D: Yamazaki)

Great article, but a weird headline that makes it seem like he had an FX budget near $15 million. At least the article explains that the whole movie cost that much, which, as has been discussed here already, makes the accomplishment that much more impressive.

I though it was interesting that he described the ‘white’ (good) vs ‘black’ (bad) FX companies in Japan), and how his is basically a white one, but he says twice that he wished he could pay more. I’ve read previously that the FX industry there can be pretty brutal sometimes, but then I’ve also heard horror stories about the American ones on occasion, too, so I guess it’s the luck of the draw for creative people in those industries. At least his office has a sushi chef on staff. That would be cool.

Kind of tempted to grab the Mondo print for this movie. Wish it wasn’t $80 though.

re: Godzilla Minus One (2023, D: Yamazaki)

Well, I couldn't get a poster to sign in time for the screening, but Yamazaki-san did stay to sign things. A few take aways from the Q&A.. film was made for under $15M. 600+ VFX shots from a team of 35. No planned sequel, but he hopes to make one. Unintentional to use JAWS and Jurassic Park as references. Almost had to cut the train scene with Noriko due to budget because he wanted to film it practical, had to go 80% CG. When given the opportunity, tried to be the opposite of Shin Godzilla (and the US made films).. focus on a human story, making Godzilla violent and terrifying. First exposure to Godzilla was as a kid, they would play the older movies on tv during Japanese baseball broadcasts on rain delay. Favorite kaiju aside from Godzilla, King Ghidorah.

That's still so unbelievable it was made for such little money. I bet Disney spends more on craft services for their movies.

Yeah, saw that video earlier on my YouTube feed. Really great work. Goes to show how KISS is the best method for most/every task.

That and how important workflow is... that he can approve/recommend shots immediately

That was my point with KISS. The director had direct access to the VFX team rather than dealing with with several go-betweens. Such a streamlined chain of command is a godsend. Also, the team being so small, while seeming like a detriment, is actually a benefit since it forces them to really hammer down what they plan to tackle and how, instead of going down a rabbit hole of unfinished or outright abandoned shots.

Although, not sure how VFX artists here would want triple the work load. I remember on Mars Attacks, we had an artist that spent 72 hours straight finalizing his shot (a quarter of that was spent rendering). And our company at the time only had 150+ shots. Japanese are known to work some grueling hours, so I cant imagine it was any different for them to work an insane schedule.

Another interview, but with a few of the VFX team with Yamazaki-san. https://variety.com/video/godzilla-m...ffects-oscars/

Has there been any streaming or physical media news about this yet? I would have thought it would have hit streaming by now.

What?! No! I am fairly certain the most efficient and cheapest way is to contract it all out to a contractor who will split the project up amongst several subcontractors who will then need to hire additional temporary contractors which need to be overseen by contracted consultants. Some smaller portions could just be crowdsourced for free on social media and to a guy I know whose cousin's sister's coworker's second job's boss likes to do this as a hobby on FIver.

I still haven't seen the film and it sucks that my schedule could not be worked out when it was first released months ago in freakin' IMAX and ATMOS.

Just give me the 4K disc at this point.

This kind of goes back to Yamazaki’s earlier interview where he discussed good vs bad effects companies in Japan, and where he tried to separate his from the others but admitted more than once that he wished he could pay his staff better. And Godzilla won’t necessarily raise the profile or asking fees of his FX house because it’s probably already near the top of the industry thanks to his own string of FX-heavy directorial projects. Still, one does envy the small, contained nature of it, compared to Abob’s version, which is undoubtedly all too true over here.

Not a peep yet.

But these days, it seems like home releases aren't announced very far in advance.

I read somewhere that Toho might be dragging their feet on a streaming/disc release because they know it's going to be pirated like crazy.

We're dealing with Toho here, so there will definitely be a waiting period (maybe longer than what people are used to).

Theatrical distribution still needs to be completed (it's still ongoing in Japan). There is also the matter of when it will be released on physical media in Japan. IMO, these two things have done before anything happens here.

Since the theatrical release is so close to Japan, the wait for physical release could be longer than usual. If physical release happens this year (no guarantee), it will probably won't happen until the second half of the year (closer to end of the year). Toho is also known for holdbacks for 4K, so don't expect a simultaneous release with BD (that's if 4K gets released).

Streaming (and also digital purchase) is a toss up. If available, it will likely be closer of when physical media gets released (likely before). Another possibility before streaming/digital would be theatrical re-release.

It will be interesting to see who releases this here on physical media. If Toho really release it themselves they will need a U.S. company to handle distribution.

Who does Toho have a decent relationship with? WB? Sony?

re: Godzilla Minus One (2023, D: Yamazaki)

Toho has an active relationship with Sony (specifically with Crunchyroll: various anime titles, Shin Godzilla). Sony/Crunchyroll doesn't seem likely since they can handle their own theatrical distribution. It could be a smaller company than the likes of WB and Sony.

I mean that sucks man. But, it had 63 days in theaters, so you had many chances.
