Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Do it! I’m interested because of Gans. And the first movie is great. The second was passable but not a worthy follow up.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
I don’t much from either of the first two except that they were atmospheric as fuck!
I’m down for more of that creepy-ass world. |
re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Bring it on!
The 1st one made a hell of an impression on me, the 2nd one wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as the 1st. If they do this again, I hope they recreate the dread and horror of the 1st one. |
re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
I don’t remember if I even saw the sequel. The first one is pretty good though.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
I really loved the first movie and got excited when I read Gans was making another one. Hopefully they don't force him to shoehorn any needless exposition this go around.
The second film, Silent Hill: Revelation, looks nice but it's rather underwhelming. M.J. Barret tried too hard to tie the first movie into a sequel that was an adaptation of the third game. It doesn't work since the first movie wasn't intended as an adaptation of the first game (though it certainly borrows elements of its plot) so much as an interpretation of how it feels to play the game. Another issue with the sequel is that the bulk of the runtime is spent talking about Silent Hill, but once they get there the film feels in a rush to be over. I did like the final scene, however. |
re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Silent Hill was one of my favorite video game series, and I agree that the first movie was really good. I also liked the second film, but nowhere near as much. Having Gans back is a great start.

Anywhere to play the very first game, preferably a remastered version?

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Good to see it going forward. The first is top-tier horror. And the heavy fantasy elements set it apart from other top-tier horror movies (basically the James Wan movies).
This thread made me rewatch the sequel recently. It was better than I remember. Still lacked the highs (mostly terror) I felt watching the first one. |

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
With filming due to get underway very soon for Christophe Gans‘ Return to Silent Hill, you’re probably wondering just what exactly the details are for the film, including the story and cast. Luckily, German website Filmportal has provided a few details, including some preliminary casting and a few changes from the game’s story. According to the site (translated, of course), Return to Silent Hill will be a German-British-Serbian co-production between Munich-based Maze Pictures with Metropolitan and Davis Films from Paris, and The Electric Shadow Company and Lotus Wallace from London. Half of the filming will take place in Germany, with Munich, Penzing, Nuremberg, Rossberg, and Lake Ammer being the locations of choice. Alongside a screenplay from Gans, the film will be photographed by Benoit Debie, with Felicity Abbott handling production design and Sébastian Prangère serving as editor. The synopsis goes like this: “Driven by the shadows of his past, James Sunderland returns to Silent Hill to find his lost love, Mary Crane (note the name change from the game). But the dark, depressing small town is no longer the place from his memories. James meets characters who seem all too familiar and who try to divert him from his search for Mary. The longer he searches for Mary, the more he begins to wonder if this is still reality – or if he has fallen into the dark underworld of Jacob Crane.” Obviously, the story has been changed up from Silent Hill 2 (Mary’s name, the new Jacob Crane character). Keep in mind that this is again all translated, so there is a potential for mistranslation. As for casting, the only name mentioned is British actor Jeremy Irvine, whose horror credits include 2015’s The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, as well as starring in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. Filmportal’s listing seems to imply that Irvine is starring as James Sunderland, though again, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. |
re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
I'm hoping this is as loosely based on the second game as the first movie was on the first game. That approach work wonderfully, given Gans was all about the tone and feel of Silent Hill.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
It seems principal photography took place from April to July 2023. I wonder when we'll finally see a trailer.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
https://variety.com/wp-content/uploa...0&h=667&crop=1 The “Silent Hill” film franchise continues with “Return to Silent Hill,” the latest adaptation of the hit horror anthology video game series. Variety has the first look at the famed monster Pyramid Head in the Christophe Gans-directed film, which is previewing at the Cannes Film Festival. After helming the “Silent Hill” in 2006, Gans returns to direct the next installment from a script he co-with Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider. The project is produced by Victor Hadida for Davis Films, Molly Hassell for Hassell Free Productions and David Wulf. “Return to Silent Hill” is based on “Silent Hill 2,” the second and most popular game in Konami’s successful video game series, which has been named to top video game lists by Time Magazine, IGN and more. Originally released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, “Silent Hill 2,” is widely considered the best game in the series (and introduced the Pyramid Head character.) Jeremy Irvine stars in the film as James, a man broken after his relationship with the love of his life, Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson), ends. According to its official synopsis, the action kicks off “when a mysterious letter from her calls him back to Silent Hill, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. While James desperately searches for Mary, he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town. But as he descends deeper into the darkness the secrets he uncovers lead to a horrifying truth, and James finds himself struggling to hold on long enough to save his one true love.” The Veterans are handling international sales for the film, with CAA Media Financing representing domestic rights. A rough cut of the film screened Thursday. “Return to Silent Hill” is the third film in the series, following 2006’s “Silent Hill,” which starred Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Laura Holden and grossed $100 million worldwide, and its 2012 sequel “Silent Hill: Revelation.” The horror video game franchise attracts more than 10 million gamers worldwide and continues to expand its footprint, too. In 2022, Konami announced plans to reboot the “Silent Hill 2” game, as well as to create three other new games. Irvine is represented by UTA, Independent Talent Group and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham. Anderson is represented by Gersh, Atlas Artists and GGA. Gans is represented by CAA. |

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Looking forward to seeing where the story goes, and how much this one can scare me.
The first movie hit so many good notes. Fond memories of being very scared through most of it. Then the reward of revenge by the end. The somber ending. I can’t think of many movies that scared me so effectively. |
re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
The first movie has always seemed woefully underrated to me. I am really looking forward to this.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
The first film is awesome. The second one is a travesty.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
I don’t remember much about the first from except it was atmospheric as shit and I enjoyed it. Quality Atmosphere in a horror movie goes a long way with me.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Metropolitan had made a fantastic remastered BD of Silent Hill.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...8d93b38376.jpg I hope this new movie inspires them to create a new 4K remaster for a 4K UHD BD release. |

Creepy imagery and music is intact so I'm sure I'll be watching.

Definitely looking forward to this, especially with Christophe Gans behind the lens again.

Nice. I hope it makes a billion dollars. I'm a big cheerleader for the first movie. And apologist for the second.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
So far, so good. I really enjoyed the first movie. Although I didn't love the second movie and can't call it good, it does have elements I like. But I am glad that Gans is back in the director's chair for this outing.

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Looks kind of terrible for treading too close to the game and its dialogue style, but also that's exactly what it should be?
Whatever, I'll be watching it. |

re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Looks to be about what I expected. The biggest jump scare I ever had playing a video game was during Silent Hill 2. It actually made me drop my controller.
If nothing else, Gans will make it atmospheric as hell, which honestly, is all it would take to get me to watch this. |
re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
I have a ticket reserved to see this tomorrow at 745pm
But, I honestly don't remember the 1st movie from 20 years ago at all And this sequel has some pretty terrible scores right now https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/return_to_silent_hill |
re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
My wife and I watched the first one this past Halloween season. It’s a solid movie if you ask me. I’ve heard some pretty poor reviews for the new one though which is unfortunate since it’s the director of that first movie.

Re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Surprised by the RT score. The first is one of the 10 or so best horror movies in the past 25 years.
|
Re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
I sort of remember the feeling around the first release. It was as though they didn't realize they had such a good movie. So there wasn't much hype. I am hoping the same for this one.

Re: Return to Silent Hill (2026, D: Gans)
Legitimately one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. More a collection of visuals and sequences than a coherent narrative. There’s a rushed 10 min explanation at the end to try and make up for it. Truly dreadful. And I hold the original in very high regard. Sean Bean was very much missed this time around.
