Second chance movies?

What are some movies you gave a second chance and liked, disliked, indifferent?

i'll tell you this has happened a lot where a movie i see makes a better impression the subsequent viewings.

Iron Man being the first and i equate that to theater experience.
and now Avengers: Age of Ultron.

what did you give a second chance and changed your mind or didn't or did something else on subsequent viewings?

I've had this happen with many John Carpenter movies. I'd watch them and think, I enjoyed that. But when watching them again, my appreciation just grows.

Rewatched Three from Hell again. It confirmed how much I didn't like it. In fact, hated it even more.

With most movies I re-watch, my initial reaction is confirmed. There are a few exceptions, but I can't think of any offhand.

I hated The Big Lebowski when I saw it in the theater. I re-visited it several years later on home video and thought it was hilarious.

On the flip side, I thought Burn After Reading was hilarious when I saw it in the theater. Watched it again on Blu-ray a few years ago and couldn’t believe how bad it was. I was embarrassed that I ever enjoyed it.

I also thought The Last Jedi was pretty good when I saw it in the theater. Repeat viewings, and seeing how the trilogy panned out, made me realize what a completely missed opportunity it was.

Re: Second chance movies?

My instinct is mostly right and confirms I still don't like the movie though sometimes it might change and maybe I was too distracted during the first viewing or it was too hot to enjoy the movie.

The opposite occurred with Curious Case of Benjamin Button where I loved it the first time and hated it the second time.

Watching the new Clerks III trailer reminded me that I’ve grown to really enjoy the first Clerks after struggling to connect with it the first time I saw it. I think some nostalgia for the 90s has something to do with it too but screw it, it stills counts as a movie I enjoy more after giving it a second chance.

I was pretty meh on it the first time too. I think it might have been a Fargo hangover. Anyway, it's probably the Coen Bros movie I revisit the most now.

Back in the VHS days, it was until the third time I watched a Fish Called Wanda that I liked it. Admittedly there were distractions the first couple times it played (I was only halfway watching it). The third time I watched it was alone on a Saturday morning. Then I went out and bought it.

I posted this in a Blade Runner thread. I always appreciated the movie, but it never really connected for me. Still I rewatched it every few years, then it finally clicked in around 2007.

I tried selling my (Blind-bought) copy for $1 last month at a yard sale. It still wouldn’t budge. :grunt:

I know I’ve told this story in a thread here before ; I saw Se7en in a theater the weekend it came out and was appalled by it. Thought is was disgusting and exploitative and excessively gory. Watched it again about a year later on VHS and discovered the movie is almost entirely gore-free. Every tasteless thing I thought I had seen was actually just in my head. Realized this must have been how the audience in Psycho was affected by the Shower Scene. Have admired the Hell out of that movie (and Fincher) ever since.

Sorry but not surprising. Figure out a way to give away. Maybe donate to the library or something.

I had the opposite reaction. When I first saw the film I was very disappointed but when I watched it the 2nd time I enjoyed the film.

When I first saw BLUE VELVET (1986), I had a bad reaction to it. Sitting in the theater, I wrote in my notebook one word, "vile."
But the imagery kept haunting me and it only gradually began to dawn on me what Lynch was doing there. So I got another chance to see it in a theater a year or two later and tried it again and it made more sense to me now and while I didn't love it, I respected it and admired certain aspects of it and got what Lynch was aiming for. Definitely an overreaction that first time.

The Big Lebowski is the first one I thought of. I thought it was hilarious the first time I watched it, then was bored out of my mind the second time. I love it more and more every time I watch it now. I was 17 when it first came out, so I'd say the changes in my opinion are more due to my growing appreciation of film than anything else.

Funny, Fargo is my choice. I hated it when I saw it theatrically in college, and didn't watch it again for over a decade. I still don't consider it a top tier Coen Bros. film, but I have a greater appreciation for it now.

Yes, I corrected it. Thank you.

There have been 3 or 4 for me, but the only one that I can remember for sure is Office Space. I was underwhelmed on the first viewing. My co-workers had hyped it up so much that my expectations were ridiculously high. When I watched it I was let down. I was thinking, "Yeah, it's OK, nothing special." Then I watched it again a year later, with low expectations, and I loved it. So, yeah, that one a second chance really paid off.

Oh I remembered a great one: The Royal Tenenbaums. I thought it was so stupid when I first watched it in high school. In the intervening years, I really dug Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel, so I gave it another shot last year and loved it.

Eyes Wide Shut. When I watched it in the theater, my reaction was "marginal thumbs up." When I bought the Kubrick DVD set, I watched the movie again. And then again and again. It's become my second favorite Kubrick movie.

My friend and I watched Get Shorty on VHS and were both bored out of our minds and we started to play with my dog, which was actually more fun. Years later I gave it a second chance and I really like it. I just didn't get it being a Hollywood satire the first time around.

I didn't care much for Blade Runner and while I'm still not a big fan and do appreciate it.

I liked the Star Wars Prequels when they first came out or I wanted to like them, but in later years I liked them less with every new viewing. Now they are some themes I do appreciate in them, but for the most part, I don't like them.

Dark City.

hated it initially, then absolutely loved it the 2nd time.

Die Hard 2

Loved it in the theater in 1990 but decades later watched it on Blu-ray and thought it was dumb, long, and boring.

Re: Second chance movies?

I mentioned in the Nope thread that Get Out is one for me. I saw it the first time once it hit Blu-ray, after much of the hype. I thought it was OK but didn't see what all the fuss was about. It worked much better for me when I saw it a second time. It's like sometimes you need to go back and watch the movie the second time for what it is rather than what you were expecting. That probably makes more sense to me in my head.
