Oh, so this is NOT based on the Raina Telgemeier graphic novel, I take it...

That is one of the more effective and creepy horror movie trailers I have seen in many years.

Yep. That’s a pretty effective trailer.
Although one of my biggest movie pet peeves is when someone repeatedly replays a 2 second clip of an audio recording over and over. It literally serves no purpose to the characters.

This looks like one of those flicks where it will be solid half hour then go bad. The head swing will make no sense and have no context.
With that said, this does look effective and hopefully it surprises.

and F right off. I saw this tonight and it was scary enough to make all us adults gasp, scream, and be scared out of our minds.
The head swing has a lot of context and is really messed up.

Saw it tonight. Liked it, even though I couldn't stop thinking about how much it felt like "It Follows"

Saw this tonight and it was great. The audience had a fun time with it. So many gasps and screams! What a great year for horror this has been. I think word of mouth will do this one good.

Saw it last night in a Dolby theater probably about 60% full.
Thought it was entertaining and never boring, but it's definitely a 1-time only watch for me. Lots of jump scares and creepy moments where you want to cover your eyes. I was surprised there were some little kids watching with their parents. Definitely not recommended for the entire family unless you want to traumatize your kids.
I would say this is more psychological thriller than it is horror. Definitely goes more into Sosie Bacon's descent into madness. I'd give it a solid B overall. A decent movie to start horror movie month.

Appreciate the marketing campaign for this film
https://fandomwire.com/paramount-doe...-promo-at-mlb/
Major League Baseball (MLB) is the world’s oldest major professional sports league and a professional baseball organization. However, imagine the fear when a very terrifying marketing strategy for the recent horror flick Smile went viral, frightening audiences in the United States.
Paramount Pictures’ viral marketing strategy was a complete success. Several media sites covered the frightening hoax, which only went viral owing to the actors’ dedication to the part. They never stopped smiling during the games, which included the New York Mets vs. Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers, among others.

Exactly. I LOVED It Follows. This feels like it was heavily inspired by it... but went for a more gruesome approach. Definitely an above-average horror movie. Well directed.

I’m terrible with faces but I thought this was Hillary Swank the whole time.
This was good. Unique story. Jump scares. And good rhythm to the sound design. In that it reminded me a lot of Sinister.

It was fun and unique and they really made it happen with marketing. But I don’t think it was quite as good as they wanted it to be.
But that was just me. There was lots of gasps and chatter in the crowd. There were also some laughs in a few parts (like the guy ripping his face skin off).

Finally got around to seeing this in a mostly empty theater on a Thursday night. I thought it was fine. It was creepy enough and I was mostly just laughing the whole time because the film is completely derivative. As mentioned earlier in the thread, it definitely takes from "It Follows" and also HBO's "The Outsider." I mean most of the middle part of the movie was taken straight from "The Outsider" by trying to trace back where the evil entity came from, only this film gives less answers.
I felt like the creators thought "Hey, smiling creepily is pretty scary, let's make a movie about that" and then filled in the rest like horror film Mad Libs.
I enjoyed it while I watched it, but I think it will ultimately be forgettable.
I guess the ending was novel in that the protagonist doesn't actually overcome the evil entity and dies at the end. Sorry if that just spoiled it for anyone, lol.

I finally saw this and came away pretty disappointed. You don't have to have seen many horror movies, to have seen everything in it before. And better.
I didn't find it boring or bad per se, but it was not creepy or scary for even one second.
Also, the story itself is completely unexplored, unresolved and unconvincing.

Watched it and didn't think it was very good. Reminded me a lot of It's Follow to the point I was thinking it might be a sequel of sorts. I really liked It Follows though. I can see why people dig the movie it. I just don't really dig horror movies where the monster can do anything. without reason. At that point nothing matters so the movie was a big nothing for me. I would have liked this movie more if it turned out there was no monster and it was all in her head.

Shows what a marketing campaign can do for a crap movie. Derivative, lazy jump "scares", way too long, annoying psychotherapy, repetitive scenes, predictable. It Follows and Ring were leaps and bounds more stylish, atmospheric and creative.

Not sure why Paramount waited so long, but they've finally released the short film Smile was based on. Laura Hasn't Slept apparently convinced the studio to let Parker Finn try to expand his short into a feature. It stars the same actress who played Laura in Smile, but it doesn't seem to be the same character because what happens in the short doesn't really connect to the movie. You can have a look for yourself and decide if it's a prequel:
