Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Paramount is doubling down on Sonic. A third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is being developed by the studio, while a live-action series centering on the Idris Elba-voiced Knuckles is set for streaming service Paramount+. The first Sonic film came out in 2020 and earned $320 million at the worldwide box office, while the sequel is set for release on April 8 and will introduce Elba’s Kunckles. For the sequel, Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of the iconic Sega videogame character, along with a supporting cast that includes Jim Carrey and James Marsden. Director Jeff Fowler also returns for the follow-up, along with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It is currently unclear if the filmmaking team will return for the third film, which is still in early development. Sega and Paramount+ are developing the live-action Sonic series, centering on Knuckles, which is set to launch in 2023. A creative team has yet to be announced. |

This property has legs, for sure. It's been kept alive for years with the various animated shows and comic runs. Apparently the comics get really in depth into the lore and character development.

Paramount Pictures has unveiled a release date for its third Sonic the Hedgehog film, at the same time pushing back the date for its Untitled Smurfs Animated Musical. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will open wide on December 20, 2024. |

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
I liked the first one. Second one should have been good and I liked the additions of Tails and Knuckles but it wasn’t quite as good as the first if you ask me. I’ll probably still watch the third one though.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
I liked both. I'm down for a third.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Still no Jim Carrey, right? Last I heard, Sonic 2 was his last film ever

I guess Jim Carrey is back after all:

Some projects are just too important and special to stay retired from.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
I think this is the first I've heard of Carrey retiring, aside from this movie. I'm all for people doing what they find best in life, but I really liked him in most movies, especially when he moved a bit further from the slapstick. As far as Sonic, I've enjoyed the first two, as have my family.

Keanu Reeves joined the cast as Shadow. Here is the interesting part. YouTube movie pundit John Campea originally broke the story on his show this morning and the trades are actually citing him.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
I'm always torn on these things because I know there's been dedicated VAs doing the voices for the anime/games for years that have done a lot of work in establishing the character in the fandom, but also having voices like Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves is really cool too and can give a movie a little extra impact.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
I watched the first Sonic movie. It was cute but forgettable. Haven’t bothered with the second one yet but I do love seeing Carrey acting like his old goofy self again.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
I like these movies and this one looks extra fun with Shadow showing up.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Saw that this was expected around $55-60mil for the weekend. That seems kinda low with the holiday coming up and winter breaks kicking in. I'd think around $70-75m

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
My son, a huge Sonic game fan, loved it. Said it was easily the best of the series with Carrey really standing out.
Going to try and catch it but neither my dad who is visiting for the holidays or daughter want to see it so won’t be for a few weeks at least. |
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Just got back. Pretty full audience. Anyway, it was funny and cute. Keanu Reeves were great as Shadow and Jim Carey was fun once again as Robotnik.
Shemar Moore makes a cameo but not as who you think. There are 2 bonus scenes. Mid-credits: Spoiler:
and post credit Spoiler:

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Paramount has really figured out the formula on these to churn them out every two years to bigger and bigger returns, and to set up each sequel perfectly at the end of the movie. My kid is already asking when Sonic 4 is coming out.
I only kind of remember the first two movies, but my feeling was that this one was a bit lesser. Most of it was fine, but then I felt the finale was a bit overstuffed. And, while I like the Chemical Brothers, I didn't think it fit for the laser dance very well, not to mention the fact that, despite the song, there was literally no button for them to push. |

If you can't get enough Jelly Roll.

Looking forward to watching this once it hits digital in a few weeks ( Jan 21)

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
We saw this Friday night and it was really fun. Jim Carrey just continues to steal the show but the Sonic characters are still fun to watch. There's apparently tons of lore from the games and comics, so they could keep making these for a while.
|
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Yeah, we enjoyed it as a family. Watched it on NYD. It’s nothing too special, but a fun, light diversion. Jim Carrey is very good in it.
|
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
Saw it last night with my wife. We liked it. The Sonic movies have been fun so far. I haven’t played many of the later Sonic games and never one with Shadow but I at least recognize the character. Jim Carrey is clearly having a blast in these movies which is fun.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
How did we miss "Sonic: Hedge Hogger" as a potential sequel title?

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)
We're a pretty big Disney family, movies, Disney+, Annual Passes the whole works. We all chose Sonic 3 over Mufasa and pretty glad we did. None of use, even the kids were fans of the Lion King remake. Mufasa looked like more of the same. My 12 yo was laughing throughout the whole movie. Especially the part when they walk in on Robotnik. That scene was just pure comedy gold. If this is indeed Jim Carrey's last movie it's a pretty good one to go out on.
