The Covenant (2023, D: Guy Ritchie) S: Jake Gyllenhaal

EXCLUSIVE: Itís been at least 15 minutes since we broke a buzzy American Film Market package, so hereís another one thatís sure to garner big interest from buyers.

STXInternational is launching sales on Guy Ritchie action-thriller The Interpreter, which will star Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier who returns to a warzone to repay a debt to his interpreter.

Ritchie was inspired to tell the compelling story after conversations with soldiers and the interpreters who risk their lives to help them.

Gyllenhaal will play Sgt. John Kinley, who on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan is teamed with local interpreter Ahmed to survey the region. When their unit is ambushed on patrol, Kinley and Ahmed are the only survivors. With enemy combatants in pursuit, Ahmed risks his own life to carry an injured Kinley across miles of grueling terrain to safety. Back on U.S. soil, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given passage to America as promised. Determined to protect his friend and repay his debt, Kinley returns to the warzone to retrieve Ahmed and his family before the local militias reach them first.

Principal photography is set to commence on January 10, 2022 on location in Spain.

Sherlock Holmes and Aladdin filmmaker Ritchie will direct from a script he co-wrote with his Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, Wrath of Man and The Gentlemen collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. Ritchie and Atkinson are also producing, with STXfilms executive producing.

CAA and WME Independent are jointly representing U.S. rights with STX. As we revealed earlier this month, the project was initially a potential Miramax joint, but STX is now at the helm.

Ritchieís Jason Statham spy action thriller Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is set to release on January 21, 2022 via STXfilms.

Gyllenhaal continues to be one of Hollywoodís most in-demand actors. The Brokeback Mountain and Prisoners star recently starred in Antoine Fuquaís Toronto title The Guilty and has Michael Bay action pic The Ambulance hitting next year.

Ritchie is repped by CAA. Gyllenhaal is repped by WME.

re: The Covenant (2023, D: Guy Ritchie) S: Jake Gyllenhaal

EXCLUSIVE: Filming is underway in Alicante, Spain, on Guy Ritchie’s untitled action-thriller, starring Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal.

Joining opposite Gyllenhaal is Dar Salim (Warrior) as Ahmed, the local Afghan interpreter working for the U.S. military who risks his life to save Gyllenhaal’s Sgt. Kinley.

Also joining are Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games), Antony Starr (The Boys), Jason Wong (The Gentleman) Bobby Schofield (Anne), Sean Sagar (The Gentlemen) and Emily Beecham (Cruella).

Gyllenhaal plays Sgt. John Kinley, who is on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan when he is teamed with local interpreter Ahmed to survey the region. When their unit is ambushed on patrol, Kinley and Ahmed are the only survivors and with enemy combatants in pursuit, Ahmed risks his own life to carry an injured Kinley across miles of gruelling terrain to safety. Back on US soil, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given passage to America as promised. Determined to protect his friend and repay his debt, Kinley returns to the warzone to retrieve Ahmed and his family before the local militias reach them first.

Spanish producer Fresco Films are providing local production services in Alicante, which is doubling for the Afghanistan locations.

Ritchie directs from a script co-written with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. Ritchie and Atkinson are producing alongside Josh Berger and STXfilms’ John Friedberg. Olga Filipuk (of Yandex-owned Kinopoisk) and Samantha Waite are executive-producing.

As we previously revealed, STX is handling sales and deals have been cut with MGM for domestic and Amazon Prime and local buyers for international distribution.

Dar Salim is represented by Emptage Hallett. Alexander Ludwig is represented by Untitled Entertainment and UTA. Antony Starr is represented by UTA and Impression Entertainment. Jason Wong is represented by 42 and Neon Kite. Sean Sagar is represented by 42 and Luber Roklin Entertainment. Bobby Schofield is represented by Lou Coulson Associates. Emily Beecham is represented by Accelerate Management.

Wow, and we can't even get a release for Ruse de Guerre yet?

There are issues with that due to the restructuring of STX.

That looks awesome. Iíve never been much of a Guy Ritchie fan but his last handful of movies have been fantastic.

Re: The Covenant (2023, D: Guy Ritchie) S: Jake Gyllenhaal

Meh, this was fine, but it didn't feel much like a Guy Ritchie movie. I don't know why there were so many people in the theater I went to. Maybe it skews to old people who go to the theater during the day.

Anyway, I don't really like this type of movie either (recent war movies), and probably wouldn't have gone to see it if I'd known what it was about.

The AC130 gunship scene was pretty cool though.

This certainly wasn’t a typical Guy Ritchie movie, but it was fantastic. Thrilling as shit. Great entertainment and a nice edition to great current war movies. One of the better movies this year. Excellent. Edge of seat till very end.

I thought this was OK. Felt like a dime a dozen military action movie.

Re: The Covenant (2023, D: Guy Ritchie) S: Jake Gyllenhaal

I enjoyed this for what it was. I thought the first half was pretty successful as an action war thriller, albeit nothing we haven't seen before, but when the movie changes gears in the second half, it isn't able to maintain its momentum. Gyllenhaal gets to go a little nuts, which is never a bad thing, but the film takes a more political bent and frankly it's not sophisticated enough to handle the themes it's trying to play with.

Still, it's better than Operation Fortune and while it may not be an option much longer, I think it's actually worth checking out in a theater. The sound really packs a punch during the action scenes and the cinematography features a lot of beautiful widescreen vistas of Spain subbing for Afghanistan. It's almost like a John Ford movie in that sense. I really enjoyed the experience, especially as I was the only person in my screening.

Re: The Covenant (2023, D: Guy Ritchie) S: Jake Gyllenhaal

I did not think it was bad at all and wished more people would have seen it though it has a critics score in the 80's and audience score in the 90's at Rotten Tomatoes so a lot of people liked it.

Too bad the Blu-ray did not have any bonus features.

Thanks Guy Ritchie for bringing this story to life.

I assume it will end up on Amazon Prime and Epix since it is a MGM movie.

While I don't see myself re-watching this film, most of my entertainment from the film came from the wonderful performances from Jake Gyllenhaal & Dar Salim.

Re: The Covenant (2023, D: Guy Ritchie) S: Jake Gyllenhaal

I rented this last week and watched it last night and overall I thought it was a pretty good military thriller and drama. Some good and tense scenes. Dar Salim was great as Ahmed. I thought he did a great job carrying the 2nd act. It's a little predictable, but overall I was entertained by it. I wasn't too crazy about how Kinley's wife was written. She seemed cold even when she decided to support Kinley's mission to rescue Ahmed.

This felt like something that would be based on a true story and I was surprised that it wasn't and was an original story. It definitely didn't feel like a Guy Ritchie at all.

I agree with both of those points.

The first half was more entertaining, and the second half was a bit predictable, but overall, it was a good watch.

Despite the pacing/structure being wildly uneven this is still a decent movie worth checking out.

Overall, I thought this was pretty great, but agree there are some pacing issues.

The action is well shot and I really liked the score.

Just watched it with the wife. Liked it a lot. Definitely pacing issues but well done. Lots of Ritchie shots.
