Help with a Star Wars memory
I thought I asked this but a search turned up nothing. Sorry if this is a repeat.
I'm watching ANH for the first time in years and wondering if my memory is bad or Lucas and his annoying edits struck again. I can recall a scene in A New Hope at the Mos Eisley cantina when Han first comes over to Luke and Obi-Wan. As he sits down he says "You're pretty handy with that light saber, old man." He then introduces himself. This implies Han recognizes him as a Jedi. So was it in an early cut or am I imagining things? |
Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
It was Han's final line to Kylo Ren.

Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
It was a callback to the scene in RoTJ when he said to Luke: You're pretty light with that hand, young man!
That was a later cut though. |
Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
Actually what he really said was "I'd like a 'handy', old man."
A lot of weird shit went on underneath the tables at the Cantina. |
Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
Damn. I guess Han really did shoot first.

Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
For real I don’t recall this scene. Pretty sure it’s not in the film.

Or you could be confusing one of the many unused scenes/takes that never made it into the final film. There's quite a bit of extra footage from the Cantina sequence (including Han Solo hitting up some chick) that didn't make it into the final film. You might be thinking of some of these things, and then letting your imagination fill in the blanks. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...b044da8d28.jpg |
Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
It's in the shooting script, but did not end up in the theatrical release.
INT. MOS EISLEY CANTINA - DAY ZB50 Luke is still giddy and downs a fresh drink as he follows Ben and Chewbacca to a booth where HAN SOLO is sitting. He is a tough James Dean style starpilot about thirty years old. A mercenary in a starship, simple, sentimental and cocksure of himself. A lovely young alien girl has her arms around him but the young space rogue sends her bouncing on her way as the group approaches. HAN You're pretty handy with that saber old man, not often one sees that kind of sword play on this side of the galaxy. I'm Han Solo, Captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewie tells me you're looking for passage to the Alderaan system. BEN Yes indeed. If it's a fast ship. HAN Fast ship! You mean you've never heard of the Millennium Falcon? BEN (amused) Should I? HAN It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 par-sec's! I've outrun Imperial starships, not local bulk- cruisers mind you. These are the big Corellian ships I'm talking about. I think she's fast enough for you old man. What's your cargo? |
Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
This is what's in the movie.
INT. TATOOINE - MOS EISLEY - CANTINA Strange creatures play exotic big band music on odd-looking instruments as Luke, still giddy, downs a fresh drink and follows Ben and Chewbacca to a booth where Han Solo is sitting. Han is a tough, roguish starpilot about thirty years old. A mercenary on a starship, he is simple, sentimental, and cocksure. HAN Han Solo. I'm captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewie here tells me you're looking for passage to the Alderaan system. BEN Yes, indeed. If it's a fast ship. HAN Fast ship? You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon? BEN Should I have? HAN It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs! |

Thanks.

Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
The line is also in the official novelization of the movie:
In a rear booth they encountered a sharp-featured young man perhaps five years older than Luke, perhaps a dozen-it was difficult to tell. He displayed the openness of the utterly confident-or the insanely reckless. At their approach the man sent the humanoid wench who had been wriggling on his lap on her way with a whispered something which left a wide, if inhuman, grin on her face. The Wookiee Chewbacca rumbled something at the man, and he nodded in response, glancing up at the newcomers pleasantly. "You're pretty handy with that saber, old man. Not often does one see that kind of swordplay in this part of the Empire anymore." He downed a prodigious portion of whatever filled his mug. "I'm Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon." Suddenly he became all business. "Chewie tells me you're looking for passage to the Alderaan system?" When I was a kid in the dark times before VHS, the only way to relive movies was through either the comic book adaptions or the Scholastic "storybooks." The storybook included scenes that were never included in the final cut of the film like Luke watching the Star Destroyer vs Blockade Runner battle through binoculars, and the Biggs Darklighter scenes. By the time I saw the movie for a second time I was surprised those scenes weren't in it. The book even used photographs from those scenes! |
Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
Since this damn thread made me cue up the movie for the zillionth time, but I couldn't hack it, I watched the deleted scenes extras. "Nice moves old man, very impressive" was the line left on the cutting room floor.
He also said "looks like someone's taken an interest in your handiwork" when the troopers enter the cantina. |

Here is that moment Kurt is referring to, about 3:25 in:

Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
When the OP asked this I began to wonder why I have the same false memory. Turns out Han Solo says this in the Marvel Comics adaptation as well: "You're pretty handy with that sabre, old man. I'm Han Solo, Captain of the Millenium Falcon; Chewie tells me you're looking for passage to the Alderaan System." Before the days of home video, I must've read issues 1-6 dozens of times as it was the only way to revisit Star Wars whenever I wanted.

Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
I wonder if it was in The Story of Star Wars album? I have that vinyl around here somewhere. Listened to it many times after seeing the movie.

However, the novelization says "Sorry for the mess. I always was a rotten host." Which is odd because the bartender is the host here, Solo would be a guest. I guess that's just another indicator of Lucas' writing abilities. |
Re: Help with a Star Wars memory
I guess that he was hosting Greedo at his table, lol.
