I agree that Giamatti should win the Oscar. Cillian was a great choice because he had the look they needed but I feel there are many actors who could have played that role well. Giamatti WAS the character in Hohldovers and no one else could have done it like he did.

This is a wonderful movie and my favorite Payne movie sind About Schmidt. Paul Giamatti was awesome and so was the supporting cast.

This turned out to be a funny and charming film. The emotional scenes were well balanced out by the sarcasm and humor conveyed by the main cast.

It’s as good as everyone says it is. Paul is great as are the other two leads.
terrific film from Payne, loved the look it, story was good. One of the beat of the year.

Catching up on the Oscar nominees.
This is a wonderful movie. I loved everything about it. Great acting from all involved. Giamatti made it look so effortless I can see him losing to more flashy performances. The “70s” cinematography was fantastic as well. It really felt like it was filmed in the early 70’s, particularly the Boston scenes.
I think it’s a little too low-key to win BP but it’s just as deserving. I think this is my favorite Payne film to date (although I’m an oddball and think The Descendants is his best film prior to this).

Where is the poll? This was my first 5-star new movie in a long time. Exactly my cup of tea, I loved it. Performances, writing, cinematography, it all came together. A wonderful film.

I haven't seen The Holdovers but after reading about all of the simmilarities between the two scripts I would have to agree with the plagiarism claim. Writers and directors should know by now that it is only a homage when Tarantino does it, everyone else it is plagiarism.

This doesn't change my opinion of the film, just have to give credit to someone else for the screenplay.
Pretty scummy move.

It will be nuts if David Hemingson wins the Best Original Screenplay Oscar tonight. It's certainly possible.

Reading the excerpts... there is nothing to this claim. It's laughable. The movie premiered at festivals and has been in wide release for months... of course they waited until Oscar weekend for the story to break.

Alexander Payne is pretty fortunate that he didn't take a screenwriting credit on this film. Sounds like he wrote some revisions and probably could have if he wanted to.

I haven't read the accompanying story or list of story beats in any depth. That said, it seems like you'd have to be pretty damn stupid to have been known to have read a script, passed on it, then turned around and developed it into an obviously plagiarized version for wide release.

Looks like the ultimate source material was a 30s French film called Merlusse. "“The Holdovers” began at the 2011 Telluride Film Festival, where Payne checked out the classic 1935 Marcel Pagnol movie “Merlusse.” Payne held on to the idea of a lonely student and his curmudgeon teacher left behind at the school at Christmas. “It was stealable,” he said."
"Stealable." Payne might've honestly just wanted to do a version of Merlusse (and there's proof he saw it pre-Frisco) and eventually looked for similar already written scripts. Gets a hold of the Frisco script but ultimately preferred hiring someone to do something closer to Merlusse.
