tick, tick...BOOM! (2021, D: Lin-Manuel Miranda) - S: Andrew Garfield

Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature directorial debut with tick, tick…BOOM!, an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent. The film follows Jon (Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield), a young theater composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?

Starring Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Tony Award nominee Robin de Jesús, Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, MJ Rodriguez, Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter, with Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens.

tick, tick...BOOM! is on Netflix this Fall.

I’ll likely end up watching it with my girlfriend as she’s a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda. I’m generally not that into musicals.

This is one of the my favorite shows! I produced it for the theater company I used to run - it's very proto-Rent - you can hear stuff that Larson was working out in this show that he ultimately used in Rent. So excited for this!

I saw the play once, about 10-12 years ago, but in all honesty I don't remember much about it.

Interesting that this has Vanessa Hudgeons, who has appeared in several versions of Rent.

When I first saw the title, I thought it was a sequel to the 1970 film Tick, Tick, Tick

I think I’ve listened to the score but don’t remember it making much of an impression on me. Regardless I’ll see those because musicals, because Larson, and because LMM.

So, after seeing how In the Heights did, are the stars big enough for this? Garfield is known, but he doesn't seem like a movie star.

It’s on Netflix, so the BO doesn’t matter.

Netflix is the perfect place for it. The Prom was also fantastic there. These movie versions of smaller musicals don’t need to have huge budgets so they are great fits for streamers.

He’s been the lead in two Spider-Man movies. He was the Oscar-Nominated lead in a war movie that made $180M. He’s a star.

Looks incredible. “tick…tick…BOOM!” Is one of my favorite musicals. Looks like the expanded the story quite a bit. I love this trend of putting these adaptations on streaming services. Perfectly suited for them.

This was fantastic. Garfield should get some award recognition for this and I think Miranda should too.

The songs were great. I loved all the cameos throughout the film, especially during Sunday with all the legends of Broadway.

Marvelous. Simply and absolutely marvelous. Now, Rent happens to be my favorite Broadway show ever. Seen it five times. Had no idea the story behind except who Larson was and that he died right before first show. Didn’t even know how. This was the origins story and it was utterly fantastic. From the performances, the music, the direction. Some of those shots are total pro shots and bravo Lin-Manual as first time director. Just a joyfully glorious and heartbreaking story all in one. I loved this. I will buy this on Blu and I will watch many times. Many nominations for this one. Garfield, Judith Light, Lin-Manuel. Everything exceptional. The duet with Shipp and Hudgens was my highlight. Just another magical musical in a handful these past couple years. In the Heights, my number 1, but this is second, followed by CODA.

tick, tick…Boom! was just what I was looking for to watch and it was incredible.

Re: tick, tick...BOOM! (2021, D: Lin-Manuel Miranda) - S: Andrew Garfield

Pretty much cried through the entire back half - it's so sad knowing that Larson will never see the success he deserved.

I produced this musical for the theater company I used to run (it's one of my favorites) and it was so cool to see how they took it to the screen. It's a one-person show that was expanded to three people and feels a little thin. The original musical is basically the scenes with Garfield on the stage with the band, narrating the story. They did exactly what the best theatrical-to-movie adaptations do - show things that can't be shown on stage and expanding it out, taking it to the streets or the apartment or the rehearsal room.

And oh my god the "Sunday" section was one of the most moving scenes I've seen in recent memory. I guess when you're Lin-Manuel Miranda you can call in a few favors - and boy howdy, as a lifelong Broadway fan I was just like "there's so-and-so, and so-and-so". Between my wife and I we almost knew them all by sight. It was so incredible.

And Garfield crushed it - it was just so, so well done.

No shit. Incredible. I was screaming "Look, it's Joel Gray! And Bebe Neuwirth! Renee-Elise Goldsberry AND Phillipa Soo! And..." the entire song. Had to go back and rewatch the scene just to hear the music.

The writer's workshop had a whole slew of cameos as well.
These article are pretty good about showing them all: https://slate.com/culture/2021/11/ti...-broadway.html

That's a fantastic list. It was so fun to be watching something like the musical workshop and think "Oh, that's Kate Rockwell...I saw her on Broadway in "Mean Girls"".

I'm kicking myself that I didn't catch Jason Robert Brown, Joe Iconis, Stephen Schwartz or Tom Kitt - I should have noticed those.

It's just incredible.

I really hope this gets noticed come Oscar time. Garfield should win Best Actor. Lin-Manuel and Best Pic nods for sure, but don’t think but would love if won.

Been listening to movie soundtrack for 3 days now.
