Cruella 2 (D: Gillespie) - S: Emma Stone
Dalmatians are proving to be Disney’s new best friends.
As Cruella heads into its second weekend, The Hollywood Reporter has learned the studio behind the Emma Stone-starrer is in early development on a sequel. Cruella director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for a sequel to the film that stars Stone as fan-favorite One Hundred and One Dalmatians villainess Cruella de Vil.
Cruella debuted May 28 simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ under the streaming service’s Premier Access tier, making it available to purchase for $30. The film has earned $48.5 million globally. It received positive reviews and has been praised for its 1970s punk rock aesthetic.
“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”
Disney has found success mining its library of beloved animated features for live-action, starting with Alice in Wonderland (2010) and including Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent (2014), Cinderella (2015) and $1 billion grossers that include Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019) and The Lion King (2019). The studio isn’t done with its successful decade-plus strategy yet as it has live-action reimaginings Pinocchio, Peter Pan & Wendy and The Little Mermaid in the works.

We watched Cruella yesterday and it wasn't half bad. Far better than I expected.
One thing I thought we could have seen more of was Estella, Horace and Jasper pulling heists as kids, I was surprised they did the time jump right away but I guess they needed to get Emma Stone on the screen.
Maybe this sequel could do it like Godfather Part 2 where we go back and see some of their adventures as kids but then also more of adult Cruella as she creates her fashion label.

Did the first one do exceptionally well on the premiere program? Only reason I can think they would greenlight a sequel despite lackluster returns.

It's got a 74/97 at Rotten Tomatoes. That type of audience engagement means merchandising opportunities.
I'll lay you dollars to doughnuts right here and now that she'll be this year's big costume at Halloween. Might even give Elsa a run for her money.

Question is will the sequel end up as a new adaptation of 101 Dalmatians? I would think yes, but Cruella is it’s own thing so maybe not, or if so there might be a different twist on the story. Either way I’ll give it a shot. Emma Stone was fun to watch as the character and the film was a pleasant surprise for me.

Yeah, I saw the credits scene. That’s why I wondered if it was going to be another version of 101 Dalmatians right away or something else.

I’ll watch, I’m finding myself interested in owning that nice steelbook of the first one I saw somewhere.

Looking forward to the sequel. I’ll probably grab the 4K of Cruella. Kinda like the standard cover art more than the Steelbook.

It sort of ended with the possibility for more, but as I noted in the original film thread, you take a character that's inherently evil and turn her into a sympathetic underdog, it changes the way she's now viewed. Not sure how they would handle her heel turn in a sequel.

I still think what makes the most sense is to do another adaptation of 101 Dalmatians. Not sure if that’s what the filmmakers will want to do or not though. The ending of Cruella pretty much set up the idea that could happen.

I guess that means Emma Stone isn't suing Disney any time soon.
In terms of her being a big Halloween costume, Halloween needs to be able to happen first, unless most people just don't give a damn now.
