Re: Disney's Haunted Mansion (2023, D: Simien)
I just got back from the early screening tonight in Dolby. Got a free Haunted Mansion pin as well. It’s really hot here in So. Cal, so this screening was pretty full.
Overall, it was fine. I was enjoying most of it, had some laughs and fun at times. Stanfield and Dawson were both charming and likable. I didn’t mind the kid who’s the son of Dawson’s character. There are little nods to the ride. If you’re bored and have time for an afternoon matinee, it’s not the worst way to kill a few hours. It wasn’t terrible.
I do think late July was a terrible time to release this. This should have been an Fall/October release. They even mentioned Halloween.
B- from me.

Disappointed by how bland the movie is. There's no atmosphere, no sense of mystery, or eeriness. The whole picture feels monotone, whether something creepy is happening or it's just a regular exposition scene. Hard to tell if I disliked it more than the Eddie Murphy version, of which I remember nothing despite having just seen it last year.

Shocked that this is directed by Simien, because Dear White People (the film) and first two seasons of the series are excellent. This looks shitty, so I guess this is the "paycheck" film for him.

Here is the free pin they gave out last night. I see some patrons are selling it on Ebay for $15 to 20.

My wife and I are both huge Haunted Mansion fans and I expected this to be decent but nothing special and instead it was terrible in every way a film can be. From the acting, the comedy, the plot, everything is bad in this. Makes the Eddie Murphy version look like a masterpiece in comparison.

I won't go as far as say it was as bad as the previous version but it wasn't good. Missed opportunity with a decent cast

Eh, I'm sure we watch way worse Halloween themed stuff in October so we'll watch it.

The Muppets one was a waste of time. Whoever thought it was a good idea to make a Muppet character out of a prawn anyways?

I’ve never liked him. Worst Muppet ever.

Turns out I didn't because this film was incredibly forgettable.
