From the forum-main page, this thread-title appeared to me as “Movies like Street Trash..” and I was prepared to give some examples like The Stuff or Brain Damage. I should’ve known there was going to be a twist in the title.

well, the only type of people that i can think of where they enjoy the wild bizarre stuff like Society,Street Trash are people that are just weird and not right in the head pretty much.

I dont mind Class of Nuke Em High and Toxic Avenger but the other stuff, damn. Just a bit too much for me to handle

I hate Cabin Fever. Society is more weird than fun. I fucking live Street Trash. I also love the Stuff and Brain Damage.
Guess I’m weird and not right in the head, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Just because some people like movies that are too much for you to handle, doesn't fucking mean they are not right in the head. Maybe they're more adventurous and not into the usual everyday stuff? And what if they like weird shit AND Disney movies? Only half of their brain is not right?

I own all of the ones mentioned above except Cabin Fever, which one viewing was enough. Street Trash has only been watched once, but I've watched the others more than once. Society is actually a pretty good commentary on class and The Stuff on consumerism. Brain Damage, Frankenhooker, Basket Case and other movies are just bizarre horror movies that have some funny elements in them. Street Trash is a different sort of movie.

We could probably list a hundred movies where you could throw this sort of criticism at. What about Midsommar? Does Requiem for a Dream do anything for you? Ever heard of a film called Baskin?

Re: movies like Street Trash, Cabin Fever, Society, etc. Who are they for anyway?

i have all the above, just got Savage Streets and then some that should not be viewed by your average consumer.

but, being i like the art of theatrical movies in general, i open myself up to new experiences, even if they are fucked up and beyond my comprehension why anyone in real life would do such things.

but, i know these are works of fiction. if i pin myself down to one genre, one type of fluffy, big star movie, then i would be missing out on a hell of a lot of great and not so great cinema (that's the joy of trying something you might be remotely interested in and if it hits, it hits, if not, so be it) and all this while not having one head cooling in my freezer...

You just recently got back from a suspension. How about not making blanket statements insulting people and calling them messed up in the head for their taste in films.

I won't explain it. I casually watched in on YouTube a while ago. It's not my cup o' tea. I won't seek it out or buy it. But I guarantee there are some movies that I DO own would make some question my sanity. But that's okay, admittingly, I have a very WIDE range of cinematic interests. As an example, I have Bambi and all the August Underground movies.

Doesn't mean you call those with a different OPINION names. And with that, welcome to my ignore list.

I like those movies, and I'm not messed up in the head. Is this a thread to bash people who like those movies? Nice ...

Funny you mention Society as that film has been on my mind recently and I going to try to locate where I stored it to pull it out and have it handy to watch again sometime in the next few months.

I didn't think I would ever want to see it again anytime this soon after seeing it, for the first time, in 2019 (or was it 2018?).
I didn't hate it...exactly. I definitely didn't have the high opinion of it that I've seen others express for it, and which prompted me to give it a shot in case I'd missed some kind of buried treasure.
It just didn't fully click with me. I may have a radically different opinion on a second watch, with expectations firmly in tow.

As to how anyone could like it or want to voluntarily watch it- for me the purchase was prompted by
1) I was interested in the themes and how successfully, or not, this particular material worked with them
2) I wanted to see if Devin DeVasquez could act.
3) Arrow is a quality label so I figured there was some value to the film if they were going to produce an SE for it.
4) I may have been feeling nostalgic for the late 80's around the time I ordered it.

Haven't seen the others, or Serbian for that matter.

Street Trash is an underground movie. It was made for a few Large. I happen to have a great fondness for it. It's hilarious and incredibly bleak in equal measure, and stands as one of the most mordantly depressing depictions of urban decay on film (Giovinazzo's Combat Shock is similar, but without the comedy). I don't like the other two films you mentioned, but they have their admirers.

Re: movies like Street Trash, Cabin Fever, Society, etc. Who are they for anyway?

Street Trash and Cabin Fever don't offend me with their content. They're more culpable for not being very good films. I recently watched Cannibal Holocaust for the first time, it was okay. Nothing offended me, and I don't think there's anything wrong with people who like it. As a film though, its nothing special. I read spoilers of A Serbian Film and have decided that the synopsis and spoilers are enough, I don't need to see it. Irreversible is a pretty fucked up movie, but it is also a mesmerizing masterpiece that I can watch over and over if I'm in the right mood.

Films that offend me are usually ones where the directors pretension and arrogance get in the way of my enjoyment of the film. Like Godards Week-end or Lars Von Triers Dancer in the Dark. To me people who like THOSE movies are not right in the head.

Ocean's 12 is another film that offends me. If I wanted to see a bunch of A listers sitting around wanking each other off, I'd watch deep fake porn.

If I get time later, I’ll put together a list of “disgusting” movies that in the future you can use to identify weirdos and those not right in the head.

I have not seen A Serbian Film (and have no desire to), but my understanding is that it's a very visceral metaphor for the Serbian government's treatment of its people. I don't know the director's precise political views, I just recall him saying that in an interview.

Likewise, I think Society (which I have seen) is also a pretty scathing criticism of the wealthy, especially "Old Money". I watched it out of morbid curiosity and then regretted it, but I think that curiosity is a large driving force for people seeking out such films.

I think you can look at artists in other media and pose the same question. H.R. Giger, for instance, or death metal. You can make the same argument against Lars von Trier films, as someone noted. Often artists express themes in works that they find most appropriate, but are perhaps disturbing to most people (and perhaps that is partially the point in expressing things that way).

A Serbian Film is not unsettling; it's just bad.

I actually like Dancer in the Dark, and I find it the least pretentious of all the Von Triers films I've seen. I mean, at least the title is not displayed on screen for the entire length of the film, there's no talking fox, or guided trips to Hell. I'll take it.
