Best Films of All-Time?

I've been using this year to go back and watch a lot of classics that I've missed. I'm curious what everyone would put as their best films of all time (not your favorite), from what they've seen. Ranked/unranked, single best of each genre/12 (or however many, just hopefully not like, 50) best overall, by country, however you want to organize them.

^ I just watched Double Indemnity for the first time a few months ago. It was surprisingly dark content for a movie of that era. Great movie though.

I thought I’d list one from each decade. I purposely didn’t choose the obvious picks.

1930s: The 39 Steps
1940s: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
1950s: North by Northwest
1960s: High and Low
1970s: The Conversation
1980s: Blow Out
1990s: Heat
2000s: No Country for Old Men
2010s: Prisoners

2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes (1968), Alien, and Star Wars (back when it was just called Star Wars).

Back to the Future

I'll put it up with the big boys like Citizen Kane and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Just because it's a comic fantasy doesn't make it any less of a perfect cinematic masterpiece. It's infinitely rewatchable and its entranced generations of film watchers over the last 35 years.

If you weren't drinking MD at the time, I recommend you see a doctor asap.

Re: Best Films of All-Time?

I'll try a couple different categorizations:

Crime: Heat (or possibly 12 Angry Men)
Sci-Fi: Blade Runner
Fantasy: The Empire Strikes Back
Historical: Seven Samurai
Romance: If Beale Street Could Talk
Comedy: Groundhog Day
Horror: The Shining

1960s: 2001
1970s: Taxi Driver (or American Graffiti)
1980s: Local Hero
1990s: Schindler's List
2000s: I'm tempted to put The Lord of the Rings as a single entry, but I'll go with No Country for Old Men or Children of Men
2010s: The Tree of Life (or Moonlight or Fury Road)
