Re: Sean Connery RIP at 90

RIP to a legend. Probably my favorite non Bond Connery movies were either The Rock or The Hunt for Red October.

I saw in the Hollywood Reporter story he died peacefully at his home in the Bahamas. I'm envious he got to relax and enjoy his later years in a tropical environment away from the limelight.

Yeah, as much as I wanted to see him on screen for the last two decades, good on him for calling it quits and enjoying the last 17 years in peace instead of staying in the public eye.

I may have seen more movies with Sean Connery than any other actor. I count 21 roles on IMDB. At least there were more if I exclude B-movie actors like Vincent Price, Buster Crabbe, and Moe Howard.

He had a good run.

I will never forget my first James Bond movie at the theater.

Summer 1966 Wyandotte,MI -Thunderball

I was 11 years old.

My mom dropped me and my friend off(you can't do that nowadays) and we both sat in the front row and never moved for 2 hrs 10 min.(or however long it was).

Thunderball still gets my vote as best James Bond(even though Goldfinger was really the best and set the standard for the rest of the series) because it was my first seen in the theater plus it had the best looking women of all the Bond movies.

Man, this f**king year. Not a surprise though, I had heard he had Alzheimer's years ago, but that was never confirmed (and often denied). Regardless, I think we all knew he wasn't in great health - but, damn, what a run. They just don't make movie stars like this anymore. I'm just happy he got the chance post-Bond to show us that he was a really great actor and not just an action star.

Re: Sean Connery RIP at 90

He took a major misstep with sci-fier “Zardoz,” and his career seemed to be foundering.
...
In the late ’70s there were more missteps such as “Meteor,” “A Bridge Too Far” and “Cuba.”
While the obit has valuable info about Connery's work on behalf of restoring the Scottish Parliament, I take issue with the writer's characterization of these films as "missteps." I saw all but CUBA when they came out and I remember liking all three of the films and thinking Connery had really expanded his range with ZARDOZ, which I saw twice in theaters back then. And while A BRIDGE TOO FAR might have flopped, none of the British actors in it suffered a loss of reputation. Regardless of critical reaction to the individual films, Connery remained popular among moviegoers like me and my friends throughout the '70s and afterwards.

:rip: Sean Connery

It wasn't unexpected but it still hurts. I have watched so many of his movies but was surprised to learn that he was offered the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy but passed because of the long shoot and to film "Finding Forrester".

2020 really sucks!

Re: Sean Connery RIP at 90

I love Sean Connery. He has been missed since he retired 16 or so years ago.

Now it's final, and that sucks.

Of course, he will always be thought of as 007 first and foremost, but he had so many great roles throughout his career. One of my favorite Connery movies is Outland. It's High Noon on one of Jupiter's Moons. Great stuff - and Connery makes it work. I'm also a HUGE fan of Highlander, and Connery is a big part of that. (Ramirez, that Spanish Peacock!)

He had so many great roles in so many memorable (often great) movies. And count me as one of the people who really likes A Bridge Too Far. Great cast, very good movie.

But I've been expecting this ever since Roger Moore died. The two of them were about the same age. When I saw the headline online this morning I wasn't the least bit surprised. But sad all the same.

R.I.P. Sir.

Just this week I read an click bait article on him turning his back on acting. There are a few of his movies left, I haven't watched. I guess I'll give Zardoz a chance. I've never watched that one, since my best friend told me, how much he hates the movie.

It's a shame he only did one film as Henry Jones Sr. I loved his chemistry with Ford

It's a bad movie, but it has a lot of interesting stuff in it. It's worth watching once.

On the DVD commentary track, even the director John Boorman says that you can skip the psychedelic trip part. :)

It was for Best Visual Effects. But the two most recent Bond films both won Oscars for Best Original Song. One was Deserved (Skyfall), one was not (The Writing's on the Wall)

Ugh. That's an hour and forty seven minutes of my life I wish I could have back....

I mean, yeah, Nick Danger is right - there is some interesting stuff in there, but nothing in the movie is enjoyable or entertaining. If you go into it like it's a college assignment to study and describe the movie, then, I guess. But as entertainment? UGH. Awful. I mean, truly, truly horrible.

To be honest, I haven't seen ZARDOZ since my second visit to see it in a theater around 1974 (it was playing with BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS). Trippy movies were kind of common back then, so it didn't seem odd to me at the time.

It's not just that it's trippy, the script is crap. The costume design is crap. The acting is crap. The direction is crap. But mostly the script is crap.
