Yeah, I remember him.
Mostly in the way that someone was trying really hard to make him "happen."

It’s on Vudu in SD, but I don’t think it’s available anywhere, especially in HDX/1080p.

I think Premiere magazine was hyping him as the next big thing. Maybe Starlog too. So I was very excited to see it at the time. I guess it's considered a bomb though, right?

Yeah, I remember the hype for him prior to the movie release. I was a projectionist at the time and we had the trailer for this movie on as often as possible. When we got the movie, it did little business and was out after 3 weeks.

Anyone remember Pauly Shore? Every time I see or hear mention of Yahoo Serious, I think about Pauly Shore.

Looked him up on IMDB, and he's 67 years old.
Would have been 35 when Young Einstein was being promoted. Figured he was a lot younger, like twenty or so.

How did anyone think it was a good idea to green light a major motion picture star vehicle highlighting a total unknown?
When Jim Carrey, Pauly Shore, Adam Sandberg, Seth Rogen, Pete Davidson were given star vehicles, they were all somewhat of a known commodity.

He does have a bitchin' 90's website still going. Which is when I think it's the last time he's done anything with it.

I wonder why anyone would think they could have made him some sort of international star. That’s like saying “Remember the incredible annoying character in Drop Dead Fred? Let’s make THAT a superstar!”

The movie was HEAVILY marketed at the time, which others have attested to. I think someone at Warner marketing thought they were invincible. “I’ll buy this odd regional hit comedy and I’ll make it the next Bill and Ted!”

I remember seeing Young Einstein in the theater at 12 years old and being a bit..disappointed. Guess I was too young to appreciate it, or too American. The marketing for this in the summer of '89 was wild. Pretty sure the trailer played with every single Batman print (WB was the distributor afterall), which means a lot of people knew about it. It did have a great 80s style soundtrack , and lots of lovely shots of Australia. That said, I only remember seeing Yahoo Serious on the cover of a couple of straight to video movies (one about Ned Kelly) after that, and never saw him again.

Although in content and tone, the movies are worlds apart, the hard sell for Young Einstein on the US market was entirely the result of the success of Crocodile Dundee.
Dundee was a huge hit in Australia that proved to have world-wide appeal. So in the wake of that, it makes sense for Warner Bros to think (or gamble on) Young Einstein could hit the same way.
I don't have any recollection of how good the movie actually was as a comedy, but in 1988, it was ahead of its time. It probably would have been received well by the same 1990s American teen audience that liked Pauly Shore comedies and Wayne's World.

In the Summer of 1989, Warner Brothers was hyping the shit out of Young Einstein and "Yahoo Serious". They really thought they had the next huge hit on their hands -- their own Crocodile Dundee, which was a MASSIVE blockbuster smash in 1986.
I think I saw that trailer at the movies about a dozen times that summer, and each time people just groaned loudly.
The fact that the film bombed so spectacularly and so quickly was especially relieving.
