Of course, there is a ton of content to watch but I tend to be fairly picky and usually enjoy watching new release movies on the weekend. There just isn’t that weekly selection that there was pre-COVID. I have plenty of series’ I can watch but sometimes I just feel like a movie.

By the time this is all over, no studio should hve anything left “sitting on the shelf”. Anything they have in the can should be released. I’m willing to pay $19 for a new release movie that I’m really interested in but not for something like The King of Staten Island or Trolls: World Tour.
I paid $25 for Scoob! and that appeared on HBO Max a few weeks later.

And Warner Bros never released any sales figures for Scoob!, so the general assumption is that it was a PVOD bomb.

That was a rare exception because it was a new studio animated movie and I was dying to see something new. But, in general I won't pay top tier premium prices for Indie movies or low budget films.

I like Kevin Bacon, but I won't pay $20 to rent his new movie. That type of film is just not worth it for me. If it was playing in the theater and I could use my A-List, then maybe I would consider it, since it literally costs me nothing extra.

The theater I was just talking had just added 2 screens to their previous 2. They've been doing little things inside (plus having outdoor screenings) but it's not like they have the funds to do whatever.

I agree. I’m willing to pay, hell, I WANT to pay $20-$25 for a new release movie but when my selection is Irresistable, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Hunt, etc. I’m just going to watch something for free.

Between new stuff on the streaming channels, backlog of things I haven't watched and revisiting some classics, I seem to be doing okay. I also miss new releases not coming out but I haven't found myself wanting yet.

I’m pretty bummed. There were a number of movies I planned to see in the theater this year. If thego the VOD route, I’ll pass. I’m not going to pay 20 bucks to rent a movie that I plan on buying a few months later.

But you'd pay to see it in the theater? Just the tickets for me and my wife are more than $20. I struggle with this too but when it comes to actually dollars, renting a movie for $20 is close to equivalent or even cheaper than seeing it in the theater.

Not for me. The majority of the time I go to movies alone. On average theaters around here are $12.00. About $8.00 if I go to a matinee which I usually do to avoid people. If I go on a Tuesday every movie is five bucks and popcorn and soda is discounted. I usually don’t go on Tuesdays unless the movie has been out for a long time since that’s the Walmart day. It’s jam packed with people in their pajama pants hauling blankets along.

Re: How would you feel if all new theatrical releases for the rest of 2020 are cancelled due to coronavir

AMC A-List is also $23.95 per month for up to 12 movies per month. Dolby and IMAX are included at no extra charge. The monthly cost is a little cheaper in smaller markets. That’s how I saw all my movies pre pandemic. Absolutely worth it if you’re a film fan. I’ll go to Regal or Harkins occasionally. Here in So. California it’s about $10 average for a matinee and about $13 to 14 bucks for an evening show. Premium shows like IMAX or Dolby will cost more when you pay out of pocket. A List makes the experience worth it and no one is pointing a gun to your head to buy concessions. I’ll treat myself occasionally.

i always tell colleagues and friends who like movies to subscribe to Regal or AMC’s programs. It saves you so much money. But some are reluctant because they feel like they won’t go enough to justify the monthly expense. I know many in this forum have also expressed that kind of reluctance.

I sure as hell wouldn’t pay $20 to rent Irresistible on PVOD. If it was in theaters, I’d use A List to see it and wouldn’t cost me anything extra.

A little bummed but I'd get over it.

While I miss going to theaters for (most) new releases, I have more than enough to watch at home. I also have a Drive-In Theater about 30-35 minutes from where I live to get the itch of going out to see a film.

On a personal level, doesn't effect me because I haven't been to the theater in a year (Spider-Man: Far From Home). However, it really sucks for the employees at these theaters not to mention the theaters themselves which will struggle to stay afloat in the meantime.

i mean i do and i don't. if they were all streamed i would watch them easily. thinking about theaters even spectacles like Tenet or new Wonder Woman. sure i miss the spectacle on big screen, but i also value my life and really could care less about a meaningless, but perhaps entertaining 2 hours, but i like living thus far...

Shit, I'd almost pay $100 just to have a theatre to myself for a new release and not have to worry about all the normal distractions with other people.

I’ve resigned myself to the fact I likely won’t enter a movie theater again for quite some time - maybe sometime next year? Maybe not?

The only movie I really would have wanted to see this year in the theater was Tenet. Thankfully Endgame and Rise of Skywalker were last year.

If the PPV model gets adopted by more studios I’ll likely use it more.

It’s insane to think about. We’re in the middle of July - arguably the greatest blockbuster movie month of the year- and we’re left with You Should Have Left, a cheapo looking CGI kids movie called Jungle Beat: The Movie, and, I shit you not, some movie called First Cow. It’s like the damn Twilight Zone!

On the plus side, I think I heard The Empire Strikes Back was #1 at the box office last week.

There's literally going to be no new movie releases on home video worth a damn in the Fall and Winter.

If there is a Black Friday, it's just going to be old shit on sale from last year and previous years.

I’m just relaxing watching stuff in my collection. The 15+ years of straight collecting paid off just for this year. Besides, watching old stuff like so much in my Criterion sets have been a real treat.

True it might be good to take a break this year from incessant spending on entertainment.

Got a lot of streaming services, video games and loads of BDs and 4Ks. I really don't "need" anything new right now in my home.

But that still doesn't make me any less upset that this year is pretty much going to be a wash and several movies I was looking forward to probably cannot be watched this year.

Bright side is every big budget movie will only be delayed. It’s not like they’ll be canceled or anything like that.

I rarely go to the theater, but it certainly does suck that those new releases on Blu-ray are obviously drying up as well. But otherwise, I'm actually enjoying my time. So many unwatched movies on my DVR and in my collection are getting watched, not to mention revisiting old favorites. That well isn't going dry.

Re: How would you feel if all new theatrical releases for the rest of 2020 are cancelled due to coronavir

I love going to the movies. I miss going to the movies. I am absolutely not going to the movies for a long time. I will be fine.

I'm very upset for the theater industry, though, as many here have said. I don't want anything to go under or anyone to be adrift. This is traumatic on so many levels.

I'm bummed for the movie industry, too, and the spiraling number of people who are out of work. It's going to be so hard for a long time.

Thinking of all of those people, and then my longing to go to the movies, I'm like, who cares about my longing?! People's lives are being ruined.

Studios and Theaters will need to adapt or else. It's like no one learned anything from the Music Industry and the Napster days.

Also, isn't there a huge backlog of films that sit on the shelf for years and never get a proper release? They can't all be bad, right?

I do like the idea of my own private theater box with a premium sound system. Sounds like a million dollar idea right there.

I wonder what it means long term though. There are a number of big budget movies all ready for release that just got delayed but I’m sure going forward studios are not going to drop a ton of money into movies for a long time. I have a feeling that big budget movies, after this initial wave of delayed movies, will dry up significantly.

The optimist in me thinks maybe it’ll be a good opportunity for studios to go back to more story-driven stories that don’t necessarily need a huge budget. But the pessimist on me thinks it’s going to be a number of years of nothing but low budget dreck that needed a big budget to compensate for the lackluster story.

The good news for old stuff is that we finally got "Rad" on disc, and a proper 3D edition of Friday the 13th Part 3 is out later this year. That box set could be the biggest release this year, without any brick and mortar retailers involved.

Our local theater is a really nice Marcus. No AMCs that are close and absolutely none that are worth the drive. I considered signing up for Alamo's service but I got the invite right before the pandemic hit. And it's about a 30 minute drive for us to get there too. I love that theater but it wasn't worth it.

So the idea of paying $20 to rent a new release the weekend it's supposed to be out in theaters and being able to watch it on my setup works far better for me personally. I'd save a ton of money in the long run.

I've said this for years. The music industry had to adapt to a digital model, the publishing industry had to adapt to a digital model and the video game industry had to adapt to a digital model - why movies are so sacred and can only release big blockbusters on the big screen is just silly in 2020. Especially since we can't even go to the theater for the foreseeable future. But I can listen to a brand new album, read a best selling book or play the latest video game tonight if I want.
