RIP Ian Holm
Ian Holm, the classically trained Shakespearean actor best known to film audiences for his performances in films including the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies, “Chariots of Fire” and “Alien,” has died. He was 88.
A rep for the actor has said Holm died in hospital on Friday morning. The actor had been battling Parkinson’s Disease for a number of years. However, as recently as January, Holm appeared in person to collect the Newport Beach Film Festival’s Icon Award in London.

Should have been nominated for his performance in The Sweet Hereafter, and should have won as well.

Sad news. I haven’t seen a ton of his movies but I always enjoyed him when I saw him.
He was one of those actors that never seemed to age. He looked like same in Alien as he did in LotR. I’m a little surprised to find out he was 88 when he died.

Damn. Sorry to hear that. Always liked him.
Also this breaks the streak of Alien cast members dying in the same order as their Nostromo crew members' deaths (though to be fair, the Director's Cut version of deaths is still active) .

I thought I knew most things Alien, but had not heard this one. Will have to look into this. Loved Ian Holm's role in this movie. He'll be missed.

Re: RIP Ian Holm

Brett dies next (Harry Dean Stanton 1926 - Sept 2017)

Now in the movie, it appear that Dallas dies next (Tom Skerritt 1933- )

But you don't actually see him die. In the DC and deleted scene, Ripley later finds him cocooned up and begging for his death

In that chronology, the next "death" would be Ash (Ian Holm 1931 - 2020)

It really hits you when you realize that about half of the casts of Star Wars, Star Trek, and Alien -- the movies and tv shows a lot of us grew up with -- are gone now.

That and musicians. Most of the music I like is from the 70s (classic rock, prog, etc). The next 10 or so years is likely to be very hard-hitting to the music I grew up on.
