IMAX or Dolby?

Which format do you prefer for movies that are available in either format.

Obviously if you don't go to the movies, then this question is absolutely meaningless to you.

I personally prefer Dolby. Plus, I believe that IMAX showings at my AMCs and probably other theatres don't have recliner seats.

Dolby Cinema unless the film was shot in IMAX or has shifting ratios.

This. Reclining seats FTW.

One and done, right here.

Always Dolby Cinema, unless it's a Nolan film. His stuff seems to be the only ones that can utilize the IMAX ratio correctly.

Yup. Close thread.

Recliner = Better chance of snoozing.

Unfortunately, Dolby Cinema only has those. But I prefer Dolby except on the rare occasion that I want to see something in 3D.

I've only seen Blade Runner 2049 in Dolby, but it was a much better experience.

"Blade Runner 2049" in a Dolby Cinema was a great movie going experience.

That was my first experience with Dolby Cinema. The most memorable moment was when I felt like I was on a rocket ship during the first flying car sequence.

I picked Dolby because I love it, but I'm surprised as of this post it's unanimous! I saw First Man in IMAX, and it was impressive. Missed the recliners though, and that makes a huge difference for me.

Dolby, all the way, no question.

Re: IMAX or Dolby?

I guess I prefer the IMAX screen. But around here, the IMAX and only Dolby Atmos screen I know of are at different independently owned theaters. The IMAX is further away, so I go to the Dolby much more. The IMAX is also older and just outside the city, so it's getting run down, and for some reason they don't do assigned seats anymore.

From what I see online, the IMAX screen is 70', and the Dolby is 60'.

Although, less than a year ago I started wearing glasses for the first time and I've seen 2 movies on IMAX since then (Joker, & Rise of Skywalker) and it's even harder now to see/focus on the whole screen at once.

NYC has one true IMAX screen and it’s great. All the retrofitted ones aren’t all that impressive.
I picked Dolby though because I find it more consistent across different theaters - even though I did once have an awful experience (horrible crushed blacks - clearly something wrong with either the projection or the digital file)

You guys wouldn’t be having this discussion if you ever saw a movie in real imax.

Well that's the rub, isn't it? IMAX has whored out its name to the point where it doedn't mean anything anymore. I know pretty much what I'm getting with Dolby whereas with IMAX all I can be sure of is that it will cost extra.
