Will Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) be #1 domestic box office of all-time?
simple question. will this be biggest movie of the franchise? movie of the decade? even close to Endgame?
i guess depending on reviews could be best.
does the bad taste that apparently many, here at least, have from The Last Jedi hurt this? though, i' not sure why. i was entertained and it did get pretty good reviews. 91% at RT. 85 at Metacritic.
so will it be the domestic box office champ and overtake Endgame?

No way in hell this overtakes Endgame.

I’ve got my doubts that this can even beat Frozen 2.

Agreed that it won't be the number #1 of 2019, much less of all time. I'm expecting a box office better than Solo, less than Last Jedi.

Endgame had a difficult time getting the number one spot, and that was a film that had far more hype and momentum going into it.
Agreed that The Rise of Skywalker will probably do better than Solo. Tough saying how it will stack up against the other films in the Sequel Trilogy. I don’t see it surpassing The Force Awakens. It could surpass The Last Jedi, but we’ll see.
I don’t think the hype is anywhere near as big for Episode IX versus what it was for any of the other recent Star Wars films. It kind of feels like everyone is like: “oh yeah, there’s a Star Wars movie coming out” rather than a lot of hype and anticipation.

I'm fully onboard the "I HATED THE LAST JEDI" bandwagon, but I don't know if there are enough of us to have much effect on the box office.
TLJ really did split the hardcore fandom down the middle. I don't know about the casual fandom, though. I think a boycott (either organized protest, or general apathy for the franchise) by that hardcore fandom probably wouldn't swing the numbers down by more than fifty million.
With the exception of Solo, the recent Star Wars movies have been billion dollar films. That's not a niche audience; that's mainstream crossover.
As far as the health of the franchise goes, we have to know who didn't go see Solo, and why they didn't want to see it. Maybe Disney has a good idea, but those of us in the cheap seats can only speculate.
I don't think TROS will bomb like Solo, but I expect it to underperform unless the word-of-mouth is really great. So far, it feels like the four decade old saga is going to go out with a perfunctory whimper and not a bang. I think it will probably do comparable to TLJ, maybe a bit, more, maybe a bit less. More than Solo, but much less than TFA. As I expect the story to end on a whimper, I expect the box office to end on a whimper as well.

It will probably do very well but I don't see it being #1 domestic all time.

I don't believe Disney expects this to beat something like Avatar or Endgame. If The Last Jedi had been better received in fan circles, there might have been a chance. It appears some form of Star Wars fatigue may have finally set in with the general populace.

I think itll be the top movie for December but not of all time. People have alot of animosity towards the series now and most of the people I know are just waiting for the Blu Ray release.

Simple answer. No.
It could be the best Star Wars movie ever and it won't make more than The Force Awakens...it just won't. Same as Empire and Jedi never made as much as A New Hope, and AOTC and ROTC didn't make as much as The Phantom Menace (although I think we can all agree that ROTS was vastly superior to TPM).

I do wonder if The Rise of Skywalker will even beat The Last Jedi as I could see it doing 550 million domestically. The reason I say it is the early estimates for opening weekend are around 190-200 million as that’s less then Force Awakens (246 million) and The Last Jedi (220 million).

Earlier this year, Avengers: Endgame set a new record for first-hour ticket sales, but Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker just blew it out of the sky. Atom Tickets reports that the Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker ticket pre-sales set a new first-hour record for the ticket-buying service, out-selling Avengers: Endgame by a staggering 45%.

No it won't beat any records. It may be successful right out of the gate but poor reviews will sink it.

The Last Jedi was VERY well reviewed but if you visit DVD Talk it was a billion dollar-making “flop” that everyone hated.

If the rumors from many youtube videos of reshoots, plot leaks, and poor test screenings are true it might not do well.

I am willing to bet that if this gets it right and I know its a far fetch thing to think. It will make a hell of a lot of money and maybe even break records. People are reluctant to go and see this right away and I can't blame them. I hope it is good... but really they can't fix all the issues this series has had with just one film, maybe if it was 3+ hours long. LOL

The fatigue's the thing. I have the TV on in the background and each morning show is doing some ridiculous tie-in.
It will do fine among the fans but I think the general public is tapping-out on this one.

This movie could do $1 BILLION domestic and still not overtake Endgame because, traditionally, SW doesn't do big business overseas. The biggest market is China and both TLJ and Solo tanked.
