Re: Your Top Ten Films of All-Time?
Wise Blood would make the bottom half of my top 10. A bottom half that is interchangable with like 50 movies that I adore. But the Top 5 were seminal movies for me. Movies that were game changers in my life. When I chose the name Hazel Motes for the board, I tried Lemmy Caution first, but it was taken. So suffice it to say Alphaville would make the list too.

Re: Your Top Ten Films of All-Time?
1. Midnight Madness - This has been my favorite movie for close to 30 years. We had it taped off HBO and we were missing the first ten minutes or so. I never saw the beginning for years until I found a real vhs copy. I still watch it at least twice a year. I’m holding out hope for a blu release, but not holding my breath. 2. The Thing - I could almost fill out my top ten with John Carpenter films, but I’ll try to keep it to one. 3. Alien - No matter how bad Ridley wants ruin this franchise, this film’s luster will never fade. 4. Dawn Of The Dead - Hands down the greatest zombie movie ever made. 5. Gremlins - My home is filled with gremlins stuff. 6. The Temple Of Doom - Yeah Raiders is better, but man I love this one a hair more. 7. Ghostbusters - The elevator scene gets me every time. 8. Back To The Future - I love all three, but obviously the first the most. 9. Die Hard - Simply the greatest action movie that will ever exist. 10. Halloween - Fuck I couldn’t do it. |

^ A trilogy of movies = 3 movies. They don't count as a single film. You have 17 movies in your top 10.

Not even the OP can follow his own instructions...and he’s edited his post like 3 times already to “fix” it. |

Re: Your Top Ten Films of All-Time?
I am never able to make a top 10 list as there are just too many choices to pare down. The best I can do is separate English Language from Foreign and make 2 lists. Since I can only post 1 list, it will be the English language one but it cannot be definitive as there will never be one for me.
1- 2001: A Space Odyssey The rest are in no particular order: Taxi Driver Annie Hall Sweet Smell of Success Life is Sweet Vertigo Nashville Alien Rosemary's Baby Glengarry Glen Ross |
Re: Your Top Ten Films of All-Time?
Within the last year or so, I made a list of films I would consider putting on a favorites list, from all genres, all decades, all countries. The final list came out to a round number: 250. I was gonna publish it on my blog, but it got too long and unwieldy with explanations for how I chose what should go on the list, so I never published it. I've been meaning to go back and shorten the text, but in the meantime I've seen new films I would add to the list, so I'd have to take something off to keep it to 250. As an exercise, I winnowed it down to 100 in case I wanted to publish a shorter list. But after 60 years of regular movie-watching, it's hard to do a top ten (even though I did one that I'd completely forgotten a few posts above). Still, it's a list that could change every day.

Re: Your Top Ten Films of All-Time?
I still have vivid memories of making up lists of this stuff all the time in 7th and 8th grade.
It's a lot harder to do now. A few things that I would definitely want to be on it would be • Jean de Florette and/or Manon des Sources • The Apartment • The Accidental Tourist • Jaws • Alien • Who'll Stop The Rain • The Silent Partner • Walkabout • Queen Christina • Out Of The Past FWIW, this is what my list probably looked liked forty years ago as I carefully printed it out in Mr. Totten's science class. Spoiler:

Re: Your Top Ten Films of All-Time?
I have tried a couple times now to make the "list". Can't do it. Something jogs the memory and I think yeah that should be on there before this etc...ends up being an internal struggle. Sigh/

Re: Your Top Ten Films of All-Time?
My list hasn't changed in about 20 years. I have not seen a new (not necessarily "new", but unseen by me) film I would rate 10/10 in about the same length of time. I think I have seen a small handful of 9.5s in that time (Dying at Grace comes to mind), but they wouldn't quite make my top-10 list.
Perhaps I was more evaluatively generous when I was younger, or not as jaded as, and more impressionable than, I am now. I also think I have lost some of my intense passion for film, especially in the last 10 difficult years. |
