‘Atomic Blonde 2’ May Get Made by a Streaming Service, Says Director David Leitch
https://www.slashfilm.com/atomic-blonde-2/
The good news: according to the Atomic Blonde and Hobbs & Shaw director, David Leitch, there is still talk of a sequel, which has caught the attention of a streaming service.
Leitch didn’t say when or where we might see an Atomic Blonde 2, but we’ve gotten word that a certain streaming service is, at the very least, interested in making the sequel. Leitch would not confirm this directly when we spoke to him for an interview (which will be running in the days ahead), but he did tell us a sequel is still in development.

As long as Theron is on board I'd watch it.

I know this is where we are headed, but it’s a shame some of this stuff is going to streaming.
Its not the same I know, but I always think direct to video = trash.

To be fair, Netflix releases some of theirs in theaters, albeit extremely limited (ie: Buster Scruggs, Roma)

Original programming via streaming services is at the top of the heap.
No other source comes close.

But yes, Amazon and Netflix do have some gems among the turds.

I don't know about "a lot of awful originals," but OK.
A lot of GOOD ones don't trend either.
For example, non-English speaking stuff of high quality often doesn't take hold domestically.
Amazon takes in a lot more of those than NF.
Ironically, I recently tried a new series on NF starring the BSG girl.
It's scary BAD.
They just never trend and get talked about.

Not including the “dumping grounds” low cost indie acquisitions.

We have learned that an ‘Atomic Blonde’ sequel is in early development at Netflix.
The first film was distributed by Focus Features and earned $100M at the worldwide box office on a $30M production budget. The first film was directed by David Leitch and starred Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Eddie Marsen, John Goodman, Bill Skarsgard, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones.
‘Atomic Blonde’ follows an undercover MI6 agent who is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.
The first film was produced by 87Eleven, a production company which is infamous for its impressive construction of action sequences, they have also developed the ‘John Wick’ series and some of the action scenes for ‘Birds of Prey’. They will also develop Netflix’s live-action adaption of ‘The Division starring Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, that film is expected to begin filming sometime in late 2020/early 2021. It is unknown if 87Eleven will return to be involved in this film but Kelly McCormack is said to be expected to return to produce the film.
Beth Kono will produce the sequel through her production company Denver and Delilah Productions, they previously produced the first film as well as ‘Bombshell’, ‘Tully’, ‘A Private War’, ‘Long Shot’ and ‘Murder Mystery’.
Kono’s production company is also developing Charlize Theron’s ‘The Old Guard’ for Netflix which is a comic book adaption of Greg Rucka’s infamous comic that follows a covert team of noble mercenaries who hold a mysterious inability to die are suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.
Charlize Theron will produce the film and is expected to reprise her role as Lorraine Broughton. Sources say that the film is still in early development and that a screenwriter is not yet attached.
David Leitch hinted in August 2019 during a interview with Slashfilm that a streaming service was eyeing to nab the distribution rights to the ‘Atomic Blonde’ sequel:
“I think there is [still talk of a sequel]. A streaming service is into it. I don’t know all the details. I was a work-for-hire on that movie, but at the end of the day, Kelly McCormick – my producing partner and my wife – she will be involved, I’m sure, as a producer. That’s how I got the gig in the first place. We’ll see.”

I’d love to see another lengthy scene done as a “one shot”
That staircase fight scene was awesome

In an interview with Total Film, Theron confirmed that they are still writing Atomic Blonde 2 and indicated it is heading to Netflix. When discussing the sequel, Theron stated, "We took [AB2] to them and Scott Stuber [Head of Original Films at Netflix] was really interested in it. We talked to him about it extensively, and we’re in the process of writing it right now. In regards to what direction the sequel may be headed in, Theron added, " That character was set up in a way where she didn’t really reveal much of herself. So I feel like there’s a lot of potential there. The bar’s pretty high, but we’re excited about it.”

Re: Atomic Blonde 2 via Streaming Service Maybe
I gave up halfway through the first time as well. I went back and watched the whole thing again at some point but I agree it missed its mark. The action is great, Theron solid, and has plenty of style but the overall execution was lacking. Maybe the plot and setting were working against it. I also didn't care about any of the characters. I really hated the "flashback from an interrogation room" plot device, as it just felt lazy.

Well, if this goes on Netflix, very unlikely I'll ever see it as, outside of Stranger Things, their titles don't get home video releases.
