I loved the show when it first started. Unfortunately I lost interest after about 5 seasons and haven’t watched anything beyond that.
I didn’t know they were going for a theatrical movie but I’m definitely down for one. As long as they don’t spend the entire film on one farm...

Despite the people who claim they're sick and tired of the show/property, The Walking Dead still has many hardcore fans. This will have an audience, especially with Lincoln back and probably as an R rated feature film.
I saw some reaction on the Universal Facebook page and it's mostly positive.

I’ll watch, because I’m a sucker for zombies. But the last episode I watched was four years ago. And I never felt the magic past Darabount’s departure.

Nobody can replicate that emotional base and warm feelings that Darabount gives. Whatever that is.
It is like how nobody could rip off Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, Michael Bay movies, etc. No matter how much money they throw at it.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It has been more than a year since you announced you would be making a Rick Grimes Walking Dead movie. Do you have a timeframe in place in terms of shoot dates and locations already locked, or at least close to locked?
SCOTT M. GIMPLE: We have a couple of different plans that we’re going with depending on a couple of different factors we have to deal with on everything from story to product aspects. There have been a lot of different aspects to it in terms of timing that are pretty much coming into rapid focus right now. I would say the past year in a lot of ways has been R&D on a lot of aspects of it.
Where is the script? Where are you with that?
We are currently refining it. I don’t want to say much more than that. It’s coming together amazingly, but we’re trying to make this very special for everybody involved and we’re holding our feet to the flames. It’s an incredibly deliberate process right now.
Do you have a director for the film yet?
The director has not been chosen for this film.
In that little teaser you showed at Comic-Con in July, it said, “Only in theaters.” What does that mean? Is there anything you can tell me about the theatrical window because obviously it’s AMC, but you’ve got Universal and Skybound so there are all these entities involved.
This is a movie that’s going to be watched in the movie theater. Eventually you won’t need a movie theater to see it, but more in line with how movies work.
So this is not a situation where it screens in theaters, but then airs a few days later on AMC?
No, this is a theatrical film. Yes, there’s AMC, there’s Universal, there’s Skybound. There are a lot of parties working together to cook up something special.
Is the plan still for three films?
Yes, but we are still playing with things. That’s the plan right now.

I checked out after, what? Season 7?
I just got tired of all the rehashing of illogical human behavior. There's always some new nutjob who has gained power in his community and he wants to wage war on the characters of the show. Rather than, of course, you know - working together to survive. They're only outnumbered by the walkers by about a 500-1 ratio.

I can't bring myself to watch the final season yet... maybe I'll rent this movie at some point. Rick was the only character I cared about anyways.

So judging by that article, this movie probably won't happen until 2021 at the earliest. They can't wait too long. Even though The Walking Dead IP is still known, interest in the TV show is probably at an all-time low right now.

This will piss off what remaining fans of the show there are, just like the X-Files movies that felt like 2 hr long filler/bridge episodes to get you to watch the tv series.

Breaking News: Scott Gimple talks in circles, says nothing!
I’m with d2cheer ... the’s downward spiral has not let up and their treatment of their audience is still insipid. The only way I see this actually hitting theaters is if it is a “comeback” after AMC finally pulls the plug.

I think these movies are going straight to Netflix like El Camino. No way they support a theatrical release unless it’s in February when all the shit gets dumped anyway.
