I guess the next question is: WHEN is this new version going to take place? It felt like the animated version took place somewhere around the middle of the 19th Century. So we’re either going to have an unrealistic black prince in the 1800s or this new version is going to have an interracial romance. I look forward to seeing what Disney chooses to do.

Everything about this has gotten so ugly. But not as bad as Disney's 1997's TV production of "Cinderella" with Brandy as the princess and Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother. The internet back then with the newsgroups were ruthless. One thread actually called the film the N word "rella". It unearthed the worst of the worst. But in the end, the movie was a ratings smash.

Pretty sure ABC re-aired it at least once, but the Disney Channel used to show it a lot in the late 90s. The DVD is still in print and is a current bestseller (#42 in Movies & TV) on Amazon.

Harry Styles is the latest actor to go under the sea.
The singer-turned-actor is in early negotiations to play the iconic role of Prince Eric in the studio’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Mermaid, being directed by Rob Marshall, is in the throes of casting, recently finding its Ariel with R&B singer Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle fame. Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are also in talks to be part of Disney’s world.
Eric is the human prince who catches Ariel's eye. The mermaid saves the prince from drowning and then makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula to exchange her voice for legs in order for a chance to make him love her. He is key in the final battle against Ursula.
The casting of Styles and Bailey show the studio’s intent of making the music a central component of the remake. Interestingly, the character of Eric performed no songs in the 1989 original. However, that was remedied in the 2000s Broadway musical, with Eric now performing several, including two solos.
Styles was famously a member of boy band One Direction who then struck out on a successful solo career. He made his acting debut with Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama that grossed over $526 million worldwide and collected several Oscars.
The budding actor had been looking for a new project to take on and even tested for the lead in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic. That part went to Austin Butler earlier this week.
The animated 1989 original won best original song and score Oscars for Alan Menken. For the new iteration of the fairy tale, Alan Menken will update his score, and will compose a new song with lyrics from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
An early 2020 production start is being planned.
Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and exec produced the studio’s live-action Aladdin remake, is producing. Marshall and John DeLuca are also producers Mermaid, as is Miranda.

I agree with your sentiment. However, I’d also venture to guess that aside from a few One Direction fans, not a lot of people are fully on board with Styles being cast either.Now, will we see any outrage online about the Prince Eric casting? I’ve got my doubts.

I'm late to the game on this one but I shouldn't be surprised by the latest white outrage.
I think these live action remakes are completely unnecessary so, if you LOVE the original Little Mermaid, just skip this film. You'll always have the original.

Aladdin is up to over $960 million at the box office. Presales for The Lion King is pretty good. Loving the original has nothing to do with watching a new version.

To be fair, I doubt many people even remember his name compared to Ariel... but most of the shock/outrage is going to come from people who aren't even interested in seeing the movie anyway, so it's not nearly as big of a headline to get outraged over.

Those of us happy about Halle's casting knew Disney would keep the Prince role White. There was no way they were going to cast a black actor as the prince. Pushing interracial relationships is "in" now. Anyway, there won't be much outcry from that camp.
