Black Christmas (2019, D: Takal) Blumhouse remake
Universal and Blumhouse are remaking a horror classic in time for the holidays.
Black Christmas, a remake of the 1974 film, will open Dec. 13 of this year and comes from director Sophia Takal.
It centers on a group of sorority sisters at Hawthorne College, who are being hunted down and killed by an unknown stalker. Soon, the killer learns that the school's women are willing to mount a fight to stop the carnage. The cast includes Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O’Grady, Lily Donoghue and Caleb Eberhardt.
The original Black Christmas was inspired by the urban legend “The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs" and is considered a pioneer of the slasher genre. It included an ending that shocked audiences of the day.
The remake has a script from Sophia and April Wolfe and is produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, and Ben Cosgrove and Adam Hendricks for Divide/Conquer. Executive producers include Divide/Conquer's Greg Gilreath and Zac Locke.
Blumhouse had success with an update of an old property last year with its Halloween earning $255.4 million.

Nothing about this announcement fills me with confidence, and there's no way they're gonna do better than Clark's original, but, sure, let's see.

Hopefully the sorority sisters won't be scared young women. Once the first phone call is made they each delve deep into their selves and pull out their inner Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor and Beatrix Kiddo to make it more modern.

I like the 2006 version.
This one is going to be diverse as all hell, too, which is great. It's being written and directed by women and the primary cast is made up of minorities. I'm down.

Synopsis:
In the new film, Hawthorne College is quieting down for the holidays. One by one, sorority girls on campus are being killed by an unknown stalker. But the killer is about to discover that this generation’s young women aren’t willing to become hapless victims as they mount a fight to the finish.
Yea, think I'm gonna pass on this "woke" take.

One more reason Hollywood is running out of original ideas
2006 was not that long ago

The first one is fantastic and still holds up today. One of the few horror movies that I re-watch every year or every other year.
Never saw the first remake, won't see the second remake either.

I was actually more impressed with the original BC when I watched the Shout! package recently than I was when I watched it on VHS or DVD years ago. I watched the original broadcast on NBC decades ago and was surprised when Margot Kidder's "phone number" joke got past the censors.

Blumhouse seems to want to what Platinum Dunes was doing and reboot a lot of iconic slasher/horror movies. Miramax is up for sale so don’t be surprised if they make a play for it to do Scream next.

Great, let's besmirch the memory of the 1974 masterpiece a second time. Throw some trash together for a few mil and make a tidy profit off the good name of the original.

I love the original and don't need a remake but Jesus Christ some of the folks here really don't like women.

I just think it’s funny that the synopsis has to point out that the women aren’t defenseless. Like it’s such an important selling point, because you know the term final girl hasn’t been a thing in slashers for like the past forty years..

I don't really get the point of the final sentence in that synopsis. What does that even mean? Are you saying that the women in slasher flicks never fought back before being killed? I never thought that it in the last remake. It's not a slasher movie without a body count.

Like Mike said, women heroines have been well represented in horror for a while now. Scream queens, final girls, those are the ones that win in the end and they have for a very long time and will continue to do so.

Re: Black Christmas (2019, D: Takal) Blumhouse remake
I gave the film's synopsis shit because, as Mike86 pointed out, the "final girl" is nothing new. My comment isn't synonymous with hating women in any way. At all. But Blumhouse is purposely making a point of touting "this generation's women". Meaning what, women were huge pussies before Twitter and a fourth-wave of faux feminism gave them a voice and power? It's pandering to the lowest degree and when a film is crafted around a movement and not a good story (like that Ghostbusters remake) it never bodes well for audiences of any gender.
How about worry about making a great film? The original "Black Christmas" is a masterclass in suspense and tension and psychopathy and remaking it is a tall task. But this'll just be some lame attempt where Billy is the embodiment of "toxic masculinity" and at the end all the girls will team up to kick his ass, "Death Proof" style.

They could inject some "Act of Vengeance" (1974) into this remake to keep this interesting if they're going the route that they're going. Or even some Beguiled for good measure.
