The actor originated the role that made him famous in the 1977 sci-fi classic.Actor Peter Mayhew, known for playing Chewbacca in Star Wars films spanning decades, has died.
The actor died April 30 in his North Texas home with family by his side. His official Twitter account shared the news Thursday.
The London native played Chewbacca in Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), Revenge of the Sith(2005) and The Force Awakens (2005).

RIP. I hope that wherever you are now that you get a medal. 
I never got to meet him but he seemed like a really nice person who was appreciative of and loved the fans.

I have three autographed photos from Star Wars actors. Now, they have all passed. Kenny Baker, Carrie Fisher and now Peter. He was always at San Diego Comic-Con. I figured it'd get his autograph the next year. Finally, in 2004, I got to chat briefly with him. No big surprise at how nice he was.

Of all the times I see him at SDCC, not once did I approach him. Not sure why. Gonna be sad not seeing his spot there any more

as someone born in 1974 Star Wars meant everything to me. and it still does to some extent. whenever these OG actors pass away a piece of my childhood goes with it and I have a huge ache in my chest. RIP Mr. Mayhew.

It’s really sobering when you realize that half of the main cast is gone: Alec, Kenny, Carrie, and Peter.
We still have Mark, Harrison, Anthony, and David.
I knew that Peter had been in poor health for a whole now, so his passing wasn’t unexpected, but it still hurts.

I have never really thought of Cushing as being in the “core” group (Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, R2, 3PO, Ben, Vader) because he wasn’t the sequels, and Tarkin never got a Kenner action figure.
No disrespect to the great Peter Cushing, but since he didn’t have an action figure, Tarkin just sort of became that random Imperial guy in the movie. Now excuse me while I make Chewbacca and Hammerhead fight each other.

As a fan of the star wars since the start this is sad. At least he was in the last good SW movie.
