Shadow (2019, D: Zhang Yimou) -- 5/3/19
In Theaters May 3rd! With SHADOW, director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and greys punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated. In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a “shadow”, a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

Opens May 3rd. I know Asian and martial arts movies aren't really popular here, but man that trailer looks badass. That blade umbrella looks sick.
I hope this opens near me.

I'm hoping it opens here. I missed the premiere at Beyond Fest last year. I had tickets but was just too tired to stay for a 10:30pm screening.

I've been playing a lot of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice lately, this looks like an excellent companion piece
Look forward to it, love the essentially black and white styles with the skintone offset.

This is coming to 4K and BD August 13th.
It's in theatres now, but it's playing in super limited release. Roughly 25 screens in the U.S. and Canada combined starting Friday. Nothing conveniently near me. Unless they add more showings, I guess I'll have to wait to see it on video.

Watched it tonight in the theater - I liked it but a warning for those psyched by the trailer: it’s a slow burn of a movie with a lot of set-up. I enjoyed it because I was curious how it’ll unfold (it passed my “did not look at the watch to see how much of the movie is left” test), but I have a feeling a bunch of people will be pissed if they went to see this movie off of the trailer having never seen a Zhang Yimou movie before (heard a few people complaining after the movie ended).
If you’ve seen Zhang Yimou movies before (and like them), i did enjoy this more than his previous work like Hero or House of Flying Daggers. In those, there was more emphasis on the lush colors. By going ultra gray in this one, it still had his style and tone...but felt more grounded and less distracting.
Again, hate to sound like a broken record, but if you’re looking to get some sort of action fix from this movie, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. It’s not a plot/action/plot/action/etc type of movie. Just want to control expectations vs what’s in the trailer

Okay, damn that was good. Definitely not for everyone, especially those who think this is another Zhang Yimou action piece. It does have its action, but so little compared to his other greats. This movie is downright a great Shakespearean tragedy. The palette is completely fine, and works well within the story. It’s not Hero, but that’s not a bad thing by any means. It’s a slow burn, but a gorgeous one to look at.
And the music is by Loudboy! I have no idea who that is, but that’s what is has on the credits. I’m guessing he’s an angry zithar player.

I also got the 4K. I really wanted to see this during it's brief theatrical run, but I could never fit it in. If it's possible I want to keep supporting these mainstream Asian releases when they do come to the States. We need more of them here.

Just got back from BB with a hot 4K copy in hand.
Can't wait to fire up the Oppo and open a nice cold brew and retire to the basement for some cinematic goodness.
Yimou is one of only a handful of filmmakers I get impatient waiting for their next work to drop.

FYI, for those who missed this in theatre and didn't purchase it on disc, it's now on Netflix.
