One of the single best performances you’ll find in the late George Romero’s oeuvre would have to be Joseph Pilato‘s scenery-chewing portrayal of Captain Rhodes in Day of the Dead, the primary human antagonist of the film and one of Romero’s most memorable characters. Sadly, we’ve learned this afternoon that Pilato has left us at the age of 70.

Sad to hear. He was so over the top in Day of the Dead, but it worked IMO.

RIP Captain
If you pay close attention you can see him as the Dean Martin impersonator at Jack Rabbit Slims in Pulp Fiction.

Funny, in those screen grabs he looks more like Robert Mitchum than Dean Martin.

Joe was one helluva character. I used to hang with him and my friends after hours at local horror conventions here in L.A. and let me tell you, the man loved a stiff drink and a long conversation, as well as being the loudest guy in the room. He was a riot. I'll miss seeing him at shows.
