Well... I'm sure there will be some Superbad comparisons here. They even got Jonah's sister. Looks amusing enough. I like Kaitlyn Dever a lot.

Told from a wildly original, fresh and modern perspective, Booksmart is an unfiltered comedy about high school best friends and the bonds we create that last a lifetime. Capturing the spirit of our times, the film is a coming of age story for a new generation.
Directed By: Olivia Wilde
Cast: Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Jessica Williams, Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis

They played this redband trailer in front of Us the other night first and it didn't go over well with the audience. I think the whole white girls trying to act "ghetto" with the hardcore hip-hop turned folks off. I thought it had its moments but seems like a remake of Superbad but with girls. I'll still see it but not in theaters.

If you're a Regal Crown Club member, they're sending out free passes to a screening on Wednesday. I would go, but I have to work. This does look exactly like a Superbad remake. I'll go watch it. I like Blockers last year.

ArcLight had sent me a "member pass" but it was at their Hollywood location for Wednesday, but I passed on it. Not in the mood to drive.

Saw an early screening Friday night, and liked it a lot. First, it has all of the usual teen comedy tropes of old and new, so by no means is there anything groundbreaking. Second, the complaint about “white girls acting ghetto” isn’t something reoccurring - it’s literally them being goofy for that one scene in the trailer.
With that said, the two leads make this movie VERY watchable. They both have good chemistry and even though the Superbad comparison is thrown at it (and I’ll admit it kinda does fit), I’d rewatch this movie over Superbad anytime. I liked Devers in what I consider to be the best season of Justified, and it was nice to see her play a different role from that one.
The direction was good, and I mean in the way that there wasn’t anything that stood out as bad, and in the end, i enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Since this is Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut, I cant really say I’ve noticed anything that is distinctly hers yet.
Overall, I would recommend it as a fun movie...with the caveat that it’s not a broad comedy. If you’re someone who is hypersensitive and loves throwing the word “SJW” at people...yeah, you’re going to hate this movie. Otherwise, it’s worth a try to see especially for the two leads.

It's getting good reviews and some are saying that the trailer(s) is quite deceiving. Some friends already saw it and they loved it.

Wasn't as laugh out loud funny as I thought it would be, but still really enjoyable. I loved Billie Lourd in this.

Loved this one. Several laugh-out-loud moments. Good heart. I about bust a gut during the "speaking Chinese" scene.

Just got out of this one and it was terrific. Lots of heart and hilarious in spots.
I laughed out loud at the scene where it went something like "And she tried to shiv the mailman for laughing at her, but he was only laughing at a meme."
Phenomenal soundtrack, too.
EDIT - Billy Lourd was awesome and stole every scene she was in.

Holy fuck is this good. A great coming of age with bit of twist. Wilde hit this out of park. And Sudekis, Jessica Williams from Daily Show, Maya Rudolf’s voice, Will Forte. Good stuff. Much better than Lady Bird, different, more raunchy than Edge of Seventeen, which I really enjoyed. It really is a female version of Superbad and a fine one at that.

When Sudekis’s Principal Brown character as one of their taxi drivers played there porn over the Bluetooth I lost it, just hearing the fapping and then he asks was that Cardi B. Awesome. So many great moments like that.

The chemistry between these fairly new leads is undeniably magnetic. Like they knew each other in real life all their lives. Best duo since maybe original Harold and Kumar aesthetic...

It was a very good movie. Quite funny in spots. But nowhere near as good as Lady Bird (not that anyone else would make that comparison in the first place - - same actress playing the lead's best friend, but a totally different sort of movie ) . And while Superbad is an easy obvious comp, it does this movie no favor because that film was much much funnier.
This move does stand on its own and is an auspicious directorial debut for Olivia Wilde.

Lady Bird comparison aren’t really appropriate. The two films are nothing alike. But I guess when you’re home and high it’s an easy, short sighted comparison. As is comparing it to a list of of other movies just because it’s about girls in high school. It’s as silly as comparing Boyz N The Hood to Dope. Or Rushmore to Napoleon Dynamite.

i only mentioned those other movies bc they were coming of age movies of recent-ish years. certainly different ways of telling and yes, dissimilar in those regards, but the concept behind is same. but, this def. had more heart and genuine story than Superbad.
