Re: One Cut of the Dead (2017 Japanese zombie movie you need to see)

Started watching this on Shudder tonight...I'm about a half an hour in.

Other than the movie-within-a-movie-within-a-movie shtick, I'm not finding much to keep my interest.
Although I've laughed a couple of times so far, the Z-action itself isn't scary at all.

I'll pick it up tomorrow night, in spite of a lack of confidence.

^There is absolutely nothing "special" about this film until you get past the 37-minute mark.

Side note, but I see this online a lot: people stopping a film to make a forum post about where they are in the run time and their thoughts. What happened to starting a film, finishing it, and then discussing all aspects of it? Unless you fall asleep or it's so terrible you can't finish it, why?

I think it’s a societal thing, with smart phones and social media apps and their constant notifications changing us into short bits of constant information creatures.

I know I’m guilty. I used to lose myself into books or movies for hours and hours at a time; but now I can sometimes barely finish a short post without my brain ready for the next item.

Thanks for the info.

Because I was tired.

Not everyone follows the same script.

Re: One Cut of the Dead (2017 Japanese zombie movie you need to see)

Finished up tonight.
I want my hour and a half back...

As far as being a comedy/horror movie goes, I found it to be mildly amusing at times, while the only scary thing in the movie was Yoshiko Takehara:

Fair enough, everyone's entitled to their own wrong opinion.

It's not supposed to be. And it rarely is in the kinds of oddball, budget-starved Japanese films that this film is entirely about the making of . . .

ONE CUT OF THE DEAD is not a horror movie, nor even a "comedy/horror" movie, in my opinion. Setting a film in the world of horror filmmaking doesn't automatically make it a horror film.

I watched this in a packed festival screening and I'd bet that NO ONE found it scary based on reactions, even during the first half-hour with its deliberate screw-ups and what not. Kinda the point, really. And yet the vast majority still got it. Despite following the discussion here that strongly suggested the film wasn't what viewers would expect based on the poster, synopsis, marketing etc., you clearly expected a straight-up scary comedy/horror movie, which this isn't. Knocking it for it's purposely-chintzy zombie action suggests you were indeed tired . . .

Still, threads like these will always find (and need!) their dissenting voices, so it was only a matter of time, what with so much affirmative pre-conditioning going on earlier.

I got that.

I have seen many MANY Z-movies over the years.
This movie's "purposely-chintzy zombie action" is something that has been done many times before.
There is hardly anything more silly than the concept of zombies ravaging the land.
However and IMO, this movie didn't pull enough funny out of the material to make it memorable.

Yup, certainly raised expectations...

But (getting spoilery here) . . .

. . . there
Spoiler:
aren't any zombies
in this film's little universe (or whatever one wants to call it). The whole "concept" of ravaging the land is irrelevant to the actual story we see unfolding, regardless of how one reacts to it in Z-movies. Assuming by "Z-movie" you mean "zombie movie", then . . .
Spoiler:
this is not a Z-movie.

No biggie. Clearly I don't get the emphasis on "zombie action" and comparing it to other movies that are actually about zombies.

Shoulda held off reading so much until you'd actually seen it then. You're clearly susceptible . . .

Yes, I know all of that.
However, the filming of a zombie movie is the stage/backdrop upon which THIS movie was played...it couldn't have been done otherwise.

I don't know if that would have helped much...

Got a 30 day free trial of Shudder and watched this first. I do think this thread over hyped it a bit for me, but in the end, I really liked it. I would say I may have even loved the last third. I laughed throughout all that. And yes POM! indeed!

Which was pretty much the point of the entire exercise.

I'll also add that, in re-reading the first page of this thread, at least none of us over-hyped it to be something it wasn't (i.e. omgthisisSUCHagreatzombiemovie!), so there's that.

Just noticed this was on iTunes, then checked and saw it's on other digital providers too. Looks like only the iTunes version has extras.
(No, it's not MA...)
Judging by cheapcharts tracking info, looks like it showed up on 11/25/19 on iTunes.
