Cool, glad he's coming back to helm these.
Part of me wishes Tom Cruise was interested in acting again, pushing himself to do something new and daring. Seeing that guy in Magnolia, that was interesting. But if he's going to just be an action star, I'm glad that he's picking the best vehicle available.

Shea Whigham has chosen to accept the mission. Whigham has joined the cast of the upcoming installments of Paramount and Skydance's Mission: Impossible series, writer-director Christopher McQuarrie revealed Friday. "You won't see him coming," the filmmaker tweeted, along with a photo of the actor.
Tom Cruise returns as spy Ethan Hunt, a role he's played since 1996. He'll be joined in the upcoming seventh and eighth installments by series newcomers Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff. Rebecca Ferguson is expected to reprise her role as Ilsa Faust.
Whigham recently played a cop in Joker, and his credits also include Homecoming, True Detective, Boardwalk Empire and Homecoming.
McQuarrie previously directed 2015's Rogue Nation and 2018's Fallout, which grossed a series best $791.1 million globally. Paramount has dated the next Mission: Impossible film for July 23, 2021, while the eighth installment will be released on Aug. 5, 2022.

I love Whigham and when he shows up. Love him in everything, bit parts or more. Especially that low budget Splinter and loved him in Wristcutters: A Love Story, which I love. But looking at his IMDb, he seems to pop up in everything. Lot of low key parts in some really good movie...

That’s interesting. Never forgot him. He was so good in good guy/bad guy role. Ultimately good in DePalma’s first, which I really enjoyed. The convo between him and Hunt before he uses the bubblegum to blow up aquarium was so good. He’s great in everything. Ready or Not! Plays dry and emotionless so fucking well...
edit...holy shit didn’t realize above link was that scene. Great! Loved when he got Redgrave on the train as well. When he puts glasses on and sees Jim and everything unfolds and he realizes everything and that Ethan wasn’t bad and he became a somewhat likable character are moments I remember most. He was a great foil, even though really a straight laced by the books good guy. Or is he? Dun dun dunnnnn...

Czerny is also great in Clear and Present Danger. Great solid actor all around. McQuarrie keeps killing it with the casting.
