Re: Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023, W/D: McQuarrie) — S: Cruise

The wait just got a little shorter for audiences to see Tom Cruise back in action as Ethan Hunt with Paramount/Skydance’s highly-anticipated Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One now set for domestic release on July 12 rather than July 14. That puts it in step with the start of international rollout and is a move designed to take advantage of early summer play.

Paramount boss Brian Robbins made the announcement while closing out Par’s CinemaCon slate presentation, and President of Domestic Distribution Chris Aronson then gave the audience an epic treat with a look at a 20-minute extended sequence from the seventh installment in the franchise. Cruise was unfortunately a no-show.

In the second trailer, Henry Czerny’s Eugene Kittridge tells Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, “Ethan, this is a mission that is going to cost you dearly.” Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa says in a voiceover, “The world is changing, truth is vanishing, war is coming.” There’s shots of Ethan zipping through Italian streets in a Fiat. “Listen to me,” Kittridge says, “the world is coming after you.” Cruise in another scene being held by villainous henchmen, “If anything happens…I’ll go to any place to kill you.” There’s green smoke filling a luxe building lobby, Cruise doing the pic’s classic motorcycle cliff jump, and a train barreling off a cliff.

Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct and wrote the script. Returning cast members include Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby and Henry Czerny. Newcomers to the franchise include Hayley Atwell as Grace and Esai Morales as the new chapter’s bad guy. Also featuring are Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma and Mark Gatiss.

The CinemaCon audience was the first to see Top Gun: Maverick last year as it all but blew the roof off of the Colosseum. And as someone said to me the other day, Dead Reckoning may just act like a spiritual successor to that movie — in other words, it’s going to be huge.

Looks pretty badass. I love the M:I movies!

It’s cool that they’re circling back around all the way to the first movie again. Almost 30 years later.

One thing about the MI movies is they deliver. Not expecting anything different.

Hard to believe this movie began production about 3 years ago and is finally coming after so many delays. I hope it is close to 3 hours, I want to savor every second of it.

I won't deny that it looks impressive, but visually it looks like a copycat of the most recent John Wick. Granted, I like that style, but I'm used to this series being the first to try something new. The stunts look batshit crazy as usual and cool to see the return of Kittridge.

Yeah but how much running time does Tom Cruise have in it?

2 hours and 36 minutes without credits probably means it’s closer to 2 hours, 46 minutes with about 10 minutes of credits. That’s John Wick 4 level.

Ahh, interesting - that helps some of my disappointment.

These idiots need to not tell me how long it is without credits! I do my internal credit length math to make myself think these movies are slightly shorter than they are!

Makes me think we're going to get a death or two of a hero character...

I normally don't jump on early tickets but with this only in IMAX for 9 days I may have to. I'm old enough to remember a year ago they advertised the IMAX sequence in front of Top Gun, and they only booked a week? (later adding two measly days)
