Probably her family asked her publicist to not release the news to the media until now.

I remember her mostly from Any Which Way You Can, which would be one of the earliest movies I saw in the theaters. I remember seeing Sudden Impact in the theater but don't recall her in it. Off topic, I didn't realize Jim Carrey was part of the Dirty Harry franchise.

I think her lack of acting ability most likely blackballed her. If it wasn't for her relationship with Clint I seriously doubt she would have gotten a job. I found her presence in his movies to always be the weakest thing in them.

She's mostly silent in Outlaw Josey Wales so she didn't stand out as much in that. Wasn't she mostly silent in The Gauntlet too? I haven't seen that one in a long time. She was just eh in Sudden Impact (mostly silent there too from what I remember) but her acting was still rough when she had lines.

^Actually, in The Gauntlet she wouldn't shut up, probably her talkiest role as she portrayed the tough-talking prostitute/convict Gus Malley, which is probably my favorite role of hers. Of course, she's mostly known for the Eastwood films, but one film people forget of hers is Death Game where she stars with Colleen Camp and Seymour Cassel, this film was remade with Keanu Reeves and retitled Knock, Knock.
I might have to rewatch The Gauntlet and Death Game to commemorate her passing.

My early memory would have been her roles in Bronco Billy and Any Which Way You Can. I remember Ratboy from the news and her troubles with Eastwood too.

I saw that when it came out. Her first movie and she was nominated for an Oscar for it.
I agree with the others that she was the weakest thing about all her Eastwood movies, OUTLAW JOSEY WALES excepted, since she didn't have any lines.

Since she was nominated for an Oscar and did some decent work outside of Eastwood stuff, perhaps it was Clint keeping her down... Of course the 70's, 80's treated abusive relationships like gossip, especially when it involved a "can do no wrong" untouchable star like Clint.
Google 'Sondra Locke' and start reading articles about her life/career.

How interesting, Clint has 8 kids from 6 different women (none with Locke) and was only married twice.
Two of those children were fathered (while cheating) during the last three years of his relationship with Locke.

Yeah, from what I recall he had Warners put her under some kind of special contract after their breakup, and then they never hited her for anything which prebeted her from working. She ended up suing both Eastwood and Warners and got settlements from both years later.
