my interest level just went up a lot, but I'm not sure he's a gun for hire type Disney wants.

Article also says: Rachel McAdams, however, will not reprise her role as Strange’s colleague Christine Palmer.

I could see Raimi for this. Kind of feel like he could fit well actually. He can do the bigger studio films and add a bit of a darker flare maybe.

He did original Spider-Man franchise to much success. I could see him do something like this. Title of movie alone sounds Lovecraftian. I could see Raimi do this. They’ve really never had a bad director yet. Either well known or barely visible. They’ve all succeeded immensely. From Branagh to Waitti to Reed, the Russo Brothers, and of course Whedon and Favreau really started it all and he’s been part of series ever since. Director. Actor. EP. I’m sure he got really rich from Marvel and of course his Disney live action movies...

It's about on par with Guardians losing Glenn Close and John C Riley.

Maybe Clea will be his new love interest.
I’ll go ahead and pitch Bruce Campbell for the part now.

Starting to? I'd say the only bold moves they've made have been Black Panther (and even Ava DuVernay walked from that project, but I'm still surprised they allowed the line "Bury me in the sea like my ancestors...") and to a lesser extent, The Last Jedi. But everything else has been cookie-cutter, for better or worse.

Rami has a pretty unique style, especially when it comes to his action scenes. It'll be interesting to see if Marvel allows him to stick with that style (should he want to use it), or if he'll be forced to be more in line with the rest of the movies. Dr. Strange was already my most anticipated Marvel movie that's been announced, but my interest is really piqued now. I also hope the Olds and Campbell make an appearance, as is tradition.

Star Wars, on the other hand, has been played too safe. The entire sequel trilogy (and that includes The Last Jedi) was the epitome of safe, non-committal storytelling. Now, I don't think Star Wars should move too far outside of the box, but the sequel trilogy did nothing but repackage a forty year-old story.

I guess I’ll go against the grain and say that Raimi isn’t a great choice. IMO, he’s an amateurish filmmaker. The Spider-man films were going to be huge no matter who directed them.
I’ll wait to see some footage before I make up my mind though. I thought the first Doctor Strange was largely forgettable so Raimi probably won’t make a sequel that’s worse.

The best bits of Raimi's Spider-Man films were when he was allowed to make them look like a Raimi film.
If Marvel allows him to get weird - as they claimed they will allow in this new phase - this could be something better than expected. We'll see, but his selection gives me more hope than [new filmmaker just handed a $150mm budget].

A cameo would be cool, but replacing Tom Holland with a 45-year-old Toby Maguire? Hard pass.

Just as the sequel to Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange gets a new director, the project is also getting a new writer.
Michael Waldron, the head writer of Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Loki, has been tapped to work on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Sam Raimi is in negotiations to make his Marvel movie return to take over helming duties on the project after Scott Derrickson, who directed the initial 2016 installment, exited over creative differences.
Jade Bartlett was the previous writer on Multiverse of Madness and the project was being billed by Marvel as its first scary movie. How scary may have been one of the creative friction points — Marvel had no comment on Derrickson’s departure and has no comment on Waldron’s hiring. Bringing in both a new director and a new writer could point to a broader reworking of the project than previously thought.
Waldron’s Loki is one of the three Marvel series that make up the first wave of the company’s shows that will air on Disney’s fast-growing streaming service (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision are the other two). His moving to another Marvel project shows the company is liking what it’s seeing so far and wants to keep him under its umbrella.
