19 year-old Ben Burns (Lucas Hedges) unexpectedly returns home to his family's suburban home on Christmas Eve morning. Ben's mother, Holly (Julia Roberts), is relieved and welcoming but wary of her son staying clean. Over a turbulent 24 hours, new truths are revealed, and a mother's undying love for her son is tested as she does everything in her power to keep him safe. Ben is Back also stars Courtney B. I saw this today. I thought it was pretty good, but a little heavy handed. It was better than Beautiful Boy.
This makes as an interesting companion piece to Pieces of April.

Same! I had no idea either Lucas was Peter's son. I too like (most of) his work. Specifically his screenplay for "About a Boy" (for which he received a well deserved Oscar nomination) and his writing/directing credits for "Pieces of April". Love both of those films. But I hate hate HATED "Dan in Real Life". Go find that old thread here for my thoughts on that movie. I also posted some really funny other online comments.
