I thought this started out okay but got worse and worse as it progressed. The ending was especially hokey. I never saw The Happening but this reminded me of what I heard about that movie regarding the unseen menace being `the wind` (or the trees or whatever).

I was impressed that Sandra Bullock had a love interest almost 30 years younger than her. And that she was able to accidentally get pregnant in her 50s.

This lost a lot of the book’s suspense during translation. I remember the scene involving trying to drive blind being much more tense. It really does seem like they blew their wad on a great opening sequence and then limped the rest of the way.

Bullock's age is hard to pin right now because she's had plastic surgery. For the most part she can get away with playing the part of a woman in her 30s more convincingly than a woman in her 50s (Bullock's real age). I hope she knows when to say when, because from some angles she looks like she's veering into Michael Jackson territory.

No she can’t. 40s sure, but definitely not 30s.

Yeah she has looked 40ish for ages and still does. 30ish? Not so much

Fuck, I didn't like A Quiet Place very much at all. All the comparisons are really turning me off to this. Oh well it is on Netflix and I don't have to go anywhere, we may watch this tonight.

Not sure how spoiler-laden we are going in this thread, so I’m going to err on the side of spoilers ...

I liked the movie and it does indeed have a quiet place vibe. I thought it was a better movie than AQP though. Thought the world building was better and the monsters were done better in this movie.

Caught this over the weekend. Decent film overall. I haven't seen AQP to compare. How did they survive for 5 years? No way they got enough food and clean water by breaking into surrounding houses to last even a fraction of that time. Especially with two newborns.
Regarding the ending, I read that the book differs a bit:
Other than the lack of explaining anything in the world (what the monsters are, why "crazy" people aren't effected the same way..etc) it was a fun ride.

I read the book and really enjoyed it while at the same time feeling like it didn't quite live up to its potential. I feel the same way about the movie.

Does the book ever explain what was going on? I know for the last several years people have shown love for films that leave things vague or unexplained but explaining things isn't always a bad thing..

Spoiler:
The lack of explanation is something that can work either for or against a film. In this case, I don't think it worked against it. Although the characters sometimes made leaps in logic to explain something or move the story forward, they did a decent job of keeping the audience just as uninformed as the characters.

Now that I have had a chance to sleep and ruminate on this a bit ...
What a waste of a star studded cast. They landed some bigger names and some great performances, but I'm guessing many of them were just for a few days of shooting. This was almost strictly a Sandra Bullock vehicle.
Was this book/script a rejected treatment for The Happening 2?
Compared to what we have gotten from Netflix-direct films so far, I would say this is in their upper tier. This could have played in theaters and done well enough.
I'm confused about noise in this movie ... she is constantly telling the kids to be quiet and not make any noise, but then she fires off random gunshots galore and is clomping around like an elephant in the woods. Does noise draw the ... whatever it is?
On that note, the birds are an early warning system (like canaries in a coal mine). So why do they make it seem (in the end) like the birds actually keep the monsters away?
Also, why, at the end, can it talk to people all of the sudden?
I challenge you to get on a river and row blindfolded ... you'll put yourself ashore quicker than if you didn't row at all.
