I thought this started out okay but got worse and worse as it progressed. The ending was especially hokey. I never saw The Happening but this reminded me of what I heard about that movie regarding the unseen menace being `the wind` (or the trees or whatever).

I fuckin' knew at some point
Spoiler:
blind folks would play a HUGE role in this.

And they make it seem like
Spoiler:
Sarah Paulson is a big deal in this but she gets "offed" pretty early on

BTW, I'm renaming this film
Spoiler:
"Thank God for Black Dudes Sacrificing their Lives to Save White Folks: But Hey, at Least One of them Got to Smash the Lead Becky".

I was impressed that Sandra Bullock had a love interest almost 30 years younger than her. And that she was able to accidentally get pregnant in her 50s.

This lost a lot of the book’s suspense during translation. I remember the scene involving trying to drive blind being much more tense. It really does seem like they blew their wad on a great opening sequence and then limped the rest of the way.

Bullock's age is hard to pin right now because she's had plastic surgery. For the most part she can get away with playing the part of a woman in her 30s more convincingly than a woman in her 50s (Bullock's real age). I hope she knows when to say when, because from some angles she looks like she's veering into Michael Jackson territory.

No she can’t. 40s sure, but definitely not 30s.

Yeah she has looked 40ish for ages and still does. 30ish? Not so much

I said she's more convincing playing a woman in her 30s (which I assume her character was supposed to be) than a woman in her 50s, comparatively speaking. I didn't say she actually looked like she's still in her 30s.

This was just ok. I think A Quiet Place was way better.

Fuck, I didn't like A Quiet Place very much at all. All the comparisons are really turning me off to this. Oh well it is on Netflix and I don't have to go anywhere, we may watch this tonight.

Not sure how spoiler-laden we are going in this thread, so I’m going to err on the side of spoilers ...

When the kids
Spoiler:

were revealed to be name “Boy” and “Girl” I thought we were in for a major plot twist. I was expecting to find out they weren’t real, but instead were part of her biggest fear — becoming attached to the kids and losing them — before she killed herself. Since they didn’t have actual names, I figured Sandra Bullock had actually loooked at the “creatures” and this was the road (in her mind) to her suicide.

That would have been amazing if the film had actually happened that way.

I liked the movie and it does indeed have a quiet place vibe. I thought it was a better movie than AQP though. Thought the world building was better and the monsters were done better in this movie.

This was where the one big change from the book bothered me.

Spoiler:
In the book, Tom died at the same time as everyone else and Malorie raised the kids entirely alone. I could believe she would name them Boy and Girl if she was alone, but I feel like Tom would have said "That's messed up, they need real names."

Re: Bird Box (2018, D: Bier) S: Bullock, Rhodes, Malkovich, Paulson -- Netflix

Caught this over the weekend. Decent film overall. I haven't seen AQP to compare. How did they survive for 5 years? No way they got enough food and clean water by breaking into surrounding houses to last even a fraction of that time. Especially with two newborns.

Regarding the ending, I read that the book differs a bit:

Spoiler:
In the book the people at the compound weren't blind from life. They all blinded themselves for the sake of staying alive against the "monsters".

Other than the lack of explaining anything in the world (what the monsters are, why "crazy" people aren't effected the same way..etc) it was a fun ride.

I read the book and really enjoyed it while at the same time feeling like it didn't quite live up to its potential. I feel the same way about the movie.

Does the book ever explain what was going on? I know for the last several years people have shown love for films that leave things vague or unexplained but explaining things isn't always a bad thing..

AFAIK based on what I've read, it's as vague as the film. What the "monster" is never gets explained.

This movie was so unremarkable that I didn't even realize that Trent Reznor did the score.

Thank you! I need to become a script doctor ... how does one become a script doctor anyway?

Yes, that occurred to me during the movie.

Spoiler:

But I guess you are damned if you do, damned if you don't. Having Tom live but not question the lack of names is probably more plausible than having him die and expecting me to believe she raised two newborns while surviving on her own. Hell, the babies surviving is a stretch either way ...

That it could turn out to be a compound where they required a person to blind his/herself to stay.

The lack of explanation is something that can work either for or against a film. In this case, I don't think it worked against it. Although the characters sometimes made leaps in logic to explain something or move the story forward, they did a decent job of keeping the audience just as uninformed as the characters.

Re: Bird Box (2018, D: Bier) S: Bullock, Rhodes, Malkovich, Paulson -- Netflix

Now that I have had a chance to sleep and ruminate on this a bit ...

What a waste of a star studded cast. They landed some bigger names and some great performances, but I'm guessing many of them were just for a few days of shooting. This was almost strictly a Sandra Bullock vehicle.

Was this book/script a rejected treatment for The Happening 2?

Compared to what we have gotten from Netflix-direct films so far, I would say this is in their upper tier. This could have played in theaters and done well enough.

I'm confused about noise in this movie ... she is constantly telling the kids to be quiet and not make any noise, but then she fires off random gunshots galore and is clomping around like an elephant in the woods. Does noise draw the ... whatever it is?

On that note, the birds are an early warning system (like canaries in a coal mine). So why do they make it seem (in the end) like the birds actually keep the monsters away?

Also, why, at the end, can it talk to people all of the sudden?

I challenge you to get on a river and row blindfolded ... you'll put yourself ashore quicker than if you didn't row at all.
