Looking for title of a legal drama
Not sure if I can provide enough of a description, but here it goes:
I think the movie is from the 90s and involved a defense attorney who finds out his (might've been a her) client did the crime (probably murder but might've been a sexual assault) but the attorney cannot be removed the case (think he/she tried to but the judge denied the request) and he/she put on a robust defense and did a good enough job that the accused was found not guilty or a mistrial. However, during one of the testimonies (of a detective), the lawyer was able to get another case re-opened and his client was eventually re-arrested and which the lawyer declined to represent them.

Alright so I remembered the movie and I was completely off on a couple of things (like when it came out and the person on the stand). Anyway, the movie was The Lincoln Lawyer.

I know. Again, I was completely off. Instead of a detective, it was his own client on the stand that he gets to say something that triggers one of the detectives sitting in the courtroom to look into another crime (as McConaughey discovered his client, played by Ryan Phillipe did the crime he's currently defending him on).

This also sounds a bit like the 1988 film "Criminal Law" with Gary Oldman and Kevin Bacon. Here's the plot breakdown according to Wikipedia:
Attorney Ben Chase (Oldman) successfully defends Martin Thiel (Bacon), a wealthy, young playboy, getting him acquitted of a series of brutal murders—only to find out later that Thiel is indeed a serial killer. Since Thiel cannot be tried again for his crimes, Chase tries to get him to incriminate himself before he can kill again.

The plot also sounds similar to season 2 of Trial and Error.
