The Curse of La Llorona (2019) D: Michael Chaves
This thing is going to rake it in! Trailer drops tomorrow but I'm digging this poster.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpqoPMuVsAAubvs.jpg Looks like it's also a standalone unrelated film to the "Conjering-verse." |
Re: The Curse of La Llorona (2019) D: Michael Chaves
“La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations. In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain. Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious…and her methods more terrifying. In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide. Beware of her chilling wail…she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom. Because there is no peace for her anguish. There is no mercy for her soul. And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.“ |

My dad, being Mexican, has wanted a LA LLORONA movie his entire life. But he got pretty pissed off when I told him that this takes place in the 70s (When the cast/crew appeared at Comic Con) but just like the Conjuring/Blumhouse machine, if this is successful, then he’ll finally get his origin story...But hopefully it’ll take lessons from Annabelle:Creation And not The Nun

The last time I saw this tale tackled that was actually pretty good was for the pilot episode of Supernatural way back when.

Grimm did it in Season 2 and it wasn't too bad either.

My mom, and aunts would completely scare us when they told us stories of la llorona when we visited family back in the small town in Mexico where they grew up. I love that you could hear her say "Mis Hijos". My mom would NOT want to see this, she would be so scared.

Not sure how Velma's going to solve the case without her glasses.

I don’t know squat about the La Llorona myth but I love most of the movies in the Conjuring-verse so I’ll definitely check this out. Linda Cardellini is a bonus. -other- |

This screened a the SXSW and the reviewer gave it a 3 out of 10. It basically said that it squandered the title character along with everything else.

I never heard of la Llarona until I moved to New Mexico as an adult. Around here, she walks along the irrigation ditches at night. Is it canonical for her to be going into people's houses? Thematically, there's a big difference between stealing children who are out too late and stealing children who are home with their mothers.

Yeah, this one I'm still seeing on general principle.

Catching a matinee of this later today.
I see this forum is just dying to see this. ;) I watched Stuckman's review last night and he was disappointed with it. He gave it a D+ |

I'm seeing reviews of people being so-so about it. Might depend on how big of a horror fan you are. The bigger a fan, the more you're disappointed.

Didn't hate it, but it's as "Ho-Hum" as you can get. I have no idea why this was Rated-R. No gore. No language. No nothing. Just PG-13 jump scares.
One the plus side, it was good seeing Linda Cardellini in a leading role on the big screen (Even though a majority of her scenes involve VERY dark lighting) and Spoiler:

I just got back from seeing it. It's decent. I'd probably give it between a B- and C+ Definitely better than The Nun.
Mostly jump scares, but I thought the acting was good, especially Linda Cardellini. I think it got the R rating because the movie had terror sequences that involved children. And then there was the glimpse of La Llorona drowning her kids. It's very short at barely 93 minutes, so this will breeze by if you have an afternoon to spare. |
Re: The Curse of La Llorona (2019) D: Michael Chaves
I just got back from my Dolby Cinema screening and it was a packed house. I enjoyed it and lots of callbacks to my childhood about that damn woman. They also had the classic Mexican lullaby that opened the film and played throughout certain musical cues.
Cardinelli is cute as hell. I'd say this is mid-tier Conjuring-verse. It buries The Nun. |
Re: The Curse of La Llorona (2019) D: Michael Chaves
I have not been taking advantage of my AMC Stubs subscription, mostly due to a lack of interesting movies coming out the past few months, so I thought I'd use it for this movie. It was a pretty by the numbers horror movie, but Linda Cardinelli is still killing it at 43. Rawr.
I've seen much worse movies, so not upset about spending 90 min of my Saturday watching this. |
