The Crown at least gave you two seasons. And the adult Martell woman looked younger than the girl.

Yeah, by 1989 Michael Keaton was a very well-known actor and a household name. Solid A- or B+ list actor with a decent and varied resume. Hosted SNL in 1982 or thereabouts. Everybody -- under fifty at least -- knew who he was. He wasn't on the same level as someone like Tom Cruise, but he was far from an unknown.

And I also remember a sort of shitstorm around the announcement of his casting because everyone was so familiar with him that he just didn't seem to be the right type to pay Bruce Wayne/Batman; he had the demeanor of math teacher more than a billionaire playboy adventurer. But he absolutely won everyone over in the role. (We also saw this play out a few years later when it was announced Tom Cruise was cast as the Vampire Lestat.)

re: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026, D: Gillespie)

When it came to casting the new Supergirl, DC Studios exec James Gunn went above and beyond before honing in on Milly Alcock to star in the upcoming film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”

Sources say Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran flew multiple actors, including Meg Donnelly, to Atlanta for old-fashioned, onscreen auditions on the “Superman: Legacy” set. The actors also donned the Supergirl suit and boots, which is an atypical move in the superhero audition process (though Jamie Dornan once wore a makeshift Superman costume to his ill-fated audition for 2013’s “Man of Steel”).

Gunn first sparked to Alcock when he saw her playing Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon.” But Donnelly made it a close contest and had the advantage of having voiced the role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in several Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s animated films, including last year’s “Legion of Super-Heroes.”

Ultimately, Gunn was looking to move away from previous depictions of the Girl of Steel, particularly the long-running CBS/CW series fronted by Melissa Benoist, and is aiming for a less earnest and more edgy version of the iconic superheroine. In the new iteration, Supergirl travels across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she meets a young woman named Ruthye and winds up on a murderous quest for revenge.

Gunn himself weighed in on the matter on Threads on Tuesday, saying, “Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching ‘House of the Dragon’ and thought she might have the edge, grace and authenticity we needed.”

The project has endured many false starts. Around the same time that the nearly finished “Batgirl” film was shelved as a tax write-off following the Warner Media-Discovery merger, the studio also quietly killed a Supergirl movie in the development stage. Sasha Calle, who plays the caped cousin of Kal-El, was introduced in the last year’s “The Flash” movie and was poised to get a spinoff of the Ezra Miller-led tentpole.

After Gunn and Safran took the DC reins in 2022, they started from scratch on Supergirl. Ana Nogueira (“The Vampire Diaries”) is writing the screenplay, while DC looks to attach a director in the coming weeks.

Boy, I think there are few things stupider in the comic book world than Krypto. Hope that isn't a huge part of this.

"winds up on a murderous quest for revenge" doesn't seem like light, playing fetch with Krypto across the galaxy kind of fare...

If that shit about having Krypto in the movie is real, then they can cast whoever they want as I don't expect to be spending much time in the Gunnverse if so.

That is the plot of the comic run the movie is inspired by.

Once an animal is mentioned, everyone loses their mind without understanding the full context.

I read this on DC Infinite a few months back after hearing so many rave reviews. I may have gotten caught up in those reviews because I liked it alot, but didn't love it. Not nearly as blown away reading it as others where apparently. Anyway, the Artwork was cool and the "True Grit" vibe was fun since I'm a huge fan of the "True Grit".

That said...

Gunn was able to make Rocket Raccoon into a fan favorite character in GotG, so I'll reserve judgment on Krypto here.

I'm not 100% on board with this until we find out who's playing Comet the Super Horse.

Trying to wrap my brain around the "context" of a "super dog" - nope, doesn't work.

Rocket was a humanoid character who could walk and talk. Is Krypto going to talk? Have thought bubbles like the comics? There are reasons to go "hmmmmm" on his inclusion.

I just bought the trade paperback. It looks good. I hadn't heard of the story before.

Krypto is basically an accessory to the story, but considering Gunn uses like the more outlandish bits of comic books to good effect in his movies (I mean Mongal, Ratcatcher, and Polka Dot Man vs Starro?) , I think something like Krypto would be well in his wheelhouse.

I was thinking the same thing, if he made good use of Starro, then any of the goofier DC characters are up for grabs. Bring on the Composite Superman!

re: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026, D: Gillespie)

I guess I see a difference between fighting something like Starro as the big bad when every character in the movie is also ridiculous vs. having a "Starro" tag along with Supergirl on all of her adventures.

I've just always thought Krypto (and other "super animals") was a dumb concept that's obviously straight out of the 1950s. But hey, maybe it'll be the best thing that's ever happened to the DC movie universe. I'm willing to be proven wrong.

I can't say it's something I would be clamoring for but he did bring preposterous concepts like a talking raccoon, a walking tree and and astronaut dog to the masses with great success.
