Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland.

The film is directed by Debra Granik from a script adapted by Granik and Anne Rosellini and based on the novel My Abandonment by Peter Rock.
Opens limited this week.

Currently 100% on RT: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/leave_no_trace

This is from the director of Winter's Bone.

Wow, it's been 8 years since Winter's Bone. As a fan of Debra Granik's first 2 films, I'll need to check this out.

Excellent movie. But so fucking sad. Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie should both WIN Oscars, but since this movie was dumped in July, I doubt either of them will even be nominated.

Re: Leave No Trace (2018, D: Granik) S: Ben Foster, Thomasin McKenzie

Trying not to read few posts in this thread for spoilers, but (without any spoilers) is this a happy ending movie, hopful or sad? My mom wants to see it, but said she needs a happy movie after what she sad she saw were dour dramas lately. I thought since PG, which I was surprised, probably not too tough. Either this or Hearts Beat Loud with Nick Offerman that looked more light hearted and fun...

The post on top of yours quotes "so fucking sad" so I'm assuming it is not an upbeat movie. PG doesn't mean much in that regard, just no swearing, gore or sex.

I saw both movies at Sundance. Both are excellent, but if you need a happy movie definitely go with Hearts Beat Loud. That movie put a huge smile on my face. Leave No Trace is not soul crushing, but there are definitely some tough, emotional moments throughout. I would hate to ascribe any particular word to the ending as I don’t want to spoil the experience. Maybe do a double features and just end on a lighter note with Hearts Beat Loud?

I didn't know what I this was about, but decided to watch it based on Foster's participation. Great movie. Not a feel-good movie, but certainly not a depressing slog. It's stuck with me longer than most other movies in the past few years.

Re: Leave No Trace (2018, D: Granik) S: Ben Foster, Thomasin McKenzie

Just watched this tonight, and thought it was beautiful. Interestingly, while watching it I thought that Tomasin Harcourt McKenzie's performance was the best I'd seen from a teenager since Jennifer Lawrence in 'Winters Bone'. I had no idea until just now that it was the same director.

My only (very tiny) criticism is that it reminded me a lot of 'Running on Empty'. But I loved that film as well, and it really wasn't a big issue for me.

Great performances by the leads

I have a question unless I missed something?

Spoiler:
What were they or the Dad running away from?

Saw this last night. I remember originally wanting to see it in theaters but never got to it. Decided to give it a rent.

Fantastic film. Loved the beautiful Cinematography and (as others have already mentioned) fantastic performances from Ben Foster & Thomasin McKenzie.
