The Silence (2019, D: Leonetti) S: Tucci, Shipka, Otto -- Netflix
The horror The Silence focuses on a family trying to survive in a remote quiet place terrorized by a deadly, primeval species that hunt by sound.
Story follows the terrifying tale of Ally, a deaf teenager, and her family whose world is turned upside down by a deadly and primeval force. In the fields near her New Jersey home, a colony of bats are attacked by a parasitic insect and soon morph into a new lethal species called Vesps. As the blind, winged creatures quickly grow, spread and attack the human population, Ally’s heightened senses become her strength. She can feel when the Vesps are close and realizes that even the slightest noise summons them in huge numbers. She and her family seek refuge in the woods where they must live in total silence. Amidst the creature chaos, they learn that humans can be just as dangerous when they are fighting to survive.

It was okay. Decent performances. I liked the family dynamic. The characters weren't too annoying, so I cared enough about what happened. Not great, but there’s way worse stuff on Netflix, i.e. Open House — yikes.

Is Netflix doing the Hallmark Channel thing with Shipka? Like just randomly throw her into every other project?

It amazes me that obvious rip offs and cash grabs like this don’t end up with studios being sued. It makes me think of stuff like Transmorphers.

I thought Tucci was great as the bad guy in Shazam!, so I'm definitely up for this.

Does it come off like a ripoff of A Quiet Place, or is there some originality here?

The only thing that’s different is the family knows sign language, because their daughter has been going deaf, so they have more of an advantage of surviving on that front. There’s also another strange subplot that develops. But no, it’s not terribly different. Pretty much a rip off.

At least that's how it usually works in real life.

I thought it was stupid that the characters were speaking to each other in sign language even when the girl wasn't around and they were in places where the creatures couldn't hear them

I would imagine either it was that way in the book or the on-set ASL advisor said that is what happens with families with a deaf member. You may not be aware you're doing it because it's ingrained.

In my defense, I should have elaborated more that the story doesn’t start out the same as A Quiet Place. The characters in this movie are developed BEFORE the creatures start coming, as opposed to just dropping the characters into the post-Apocalypse world. So anyway, it’s highly unoriginal.

Even if A Quiet Place never existed I don't think this one would have achieved anything close to the same success with this concept. I didn't hate it, but I found it more silly than scary.
They promoted this saying that the fact that the daughter was deaf gave the family a special advantage, but aside from the sign language aspect I didn't see this executed in any way.
I felt like they took the things I found stupid with A Quiet Place and mixed them with the things I find ridiculous with The Walking Dead.

Wasn't crazy about this one. The acting was o.k. and there was some suspense here and there. But those creatures! So they were basically
Yawn. And they showed them way too soon and way too often. Nothing menacing about them at all. This also came out after "A Quiet Place" too soon.
