Crazy Rich Asians...wow!! did I freaking love this movie. it followed every trope in the rom-com genre, but did it in such a new, fresh fashion, that you've never really seen it before. it was just magic all the way through. had a smile on face whole time. simply dazzling movie making and movie making at finest. this should and will be up for BP at Oscars. loved every minute and it will be so rewatchable. this is my second favorite movie of 2018, right behind Infinity War.

It was alright...my wife loved it. I'd rather watch Joy Luck Club again and I'm not really into melodrama.

It's your basic generic Hallmark Channel movie with higher production values, sponsored by the Singapore Ministry of Tourism. If you're OK with that, you'll love the movie.

Huh. Well. Yeah. I'm surprised by how okay I am with that.

Look this movie has gotten the asian community all excited and that's fine. If anyone thinks this is suddenly going to create an asian trend in Hollywood they are sorely mistaken
Anyone remember Slumdog Millionaire (yes i know technically it was a british movie), after that everyone was Indian Indian Indian, Bollywood Bollywood Bollywood, curries curries curries. Since then there have been precisely Jack and Shit successful all indian cast movies in Hollywood
And that's exactly what is happening with this movie

I don't think many are expecting that, they're mostly happy that it was a success and hope one or two Asians get cast in things on occasion.

you know, i didn't even see this movie as an ethnic specific movie. i think it transcended all that and is just a great rom-com. sure, it's great that all are getting noticed. long and stupidly overdue. i still can't understand why so many barriers for anyone not white Anglo-Saxon in this day in age. African Americans targeted still, if not more. All cultures basically that isn't "White America", whatever the fuck that means today, are discriminated against and you'd think we would learn from the past and just have everyone be normal and the same, while still holding on to the traditions and cultural beliefs that make you...you.

Like others have said, if this was an all white cast, it would barely make it as a lifetime movie
If you take the unique 'asianisms' out of it, it is a very ordinary rom com
Even the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li have only been supporting characters in Hollywood.
But you know, Hong Kong cinema do not make movies with all white casts. So its all really balanced

That thing turned me off to anything Danny Boyle-involved in ways that "The Beach" never could. Absolutely revolting.
I'm all for representation. Slumdog Millionaire was a textbook lesson on how NOT to do so. I wasn't a big fan of Crazy Rich Asians but at least it presented itself in a way that didn't give two wet shits about pleasing its white Western masters.
And Mucinex doesn't work.

Slumdog Millionaire was pretty good. Still like it, but haven't seen it in awhile.
Depends on what you're calling "asianisms", although just re-typing that word feels like you're treading a thin line there. This is where I disagree a lot about it being no better then a Hallmark/Lifetime movie, since there's a lot of nuances involving Chinese culture, not just with the cast or the setting in Singapore but both family and wealth dynamics. It's understandable to Westerners in the context of the movie, but being Chinese it was pretty relate-able.

Maybe because Slumdog Millionaire was a vile fucking movie, so fucking insulting to the Indian community as it engaged in one wretched Indian stereotype after another in order to provide "culturally inclusive" entertainment for self-satisfied white liberal Westerners.
.
.
And crazy rich asians doesn't with it's portrayal of viciously controlling asian parents who are classist, racist and just about everything ist ?
No one has actually picked up on the most racist part of the movie, the party boat. The message there was foreign girls (in this case mostly causasian) are good enough to fuck, but not to date/marry

I’m kind of late to the party, I snagged this movie when it went on a good sale, and really liked the movie. Predictable for sure, but I’m a sucker for a wedding rom com. Awkwafina is funny as all hell. A great cast, and loved the song choices. Definitely a good blind buy.

How is she a horrible person? I only heard of the "Getting angry because my show got renewed" bit, but I actually get that one.

She shouldn't have made her disappointment public. A bad decision doesn't make her horrible. Otherwise we'd all be horrible people.

I think anyone that's been in a long contract could relate to some extent there, but yeah she shoulda kept it to herself.

Imagine you're a struggling actor and you hit the jackpot by landing a starring role on a TV series that gets you a fair amount of acclaim and popularity. And then you get picked to star in a movie that turns out to be huge. You want to strike while the iron is hot as now you're in demand for all sorts of cool roles. But you've got to turn them down as the show comes first. Even though the show is past its prime and everyone knows it, you're under contract. Privately (emphasis on PRIVATELY), you're thinking to yourself about the missed opportunities and the potential career boost. You do not air this grievance publicly. Hollywood is a very small community where everyone is interconnected with each other. Badmouthing your project while you're still on it has long-lasting repercussions.
The extra X-factor to all this is that Constance is one of a very small group of actresses of Asian descent working regularly in Western tv/movies, so her faux pas had extra fallout.
