Capone (2020, D: Josh Trank) S: Tom Hardy

Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, and Kathrine Narducci are joining Tom Hardy in the Al Capone biopic “Fonzo,” written and directed by Josh Trank.

The film is backed by Bron Studios, in association with Creative Wealth Media. Principal photography will begin on April 2 in New Orleans.

The producers are Aaron L. Gilbert for Bron; Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder for Addictive Pictures; and Lawrence Bender for A Band Apart, alongside executive producer Jason Cloth of Creative Wealth Media. CAA and Endeavor Content are handling North American rights, with Bloom working on international sales.

Capone was a ruthless mobster who ruled Chicago with an iron fist during the 1920s. He was prosecuted for income tax evasion in 1931 and imprisoned. He died at the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, of dementia.

Cardellini will play Capone’s long-suffering wife Mae, Dillon will depict his closest friend Johnny, MacLachlan will portray his doctor Karlock, and Narducci will be Rosie, one of his sisters.

Cardellini most recently starred in the Netflix series “Bloodline.” Dillon will next be seen in Lars von Trier’s “The House That Jack Built.” MacLachlan starred in Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” revival.

Cardellini is represented by Mosaic and ICM Partners; Dillon is represented by Untitled Entertainment and UTA; MacLachlan is represented by UTA and Management 360; and Narducci is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Bret Adams Ltd.

First thought that came to my mind was that I thought Capone had a very, very different build.

Maybe he'll be a superhero mobster? I mean, considering the director's history . . .

re: Capone (2020, D: Josh Trank) S: Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy gets a lot of flak for his characters’ voices — hello Bane! — but he’s decided to get ahead of any critique of his voice as Al Capone in Josh Trank’s upcoming Fonzo. We haven’t heard the voice yet, but why not allow an opening argument? A new interview with Esquire includes a peek into his process, where Hardy describes who influenced his Capone accent: “The voice he developed for Al Capone in Fonzo is based on Bugs Bunny’s; to prove it, he plays me a clip of the raw footage on his phone,” Esquire reports. “Sure enough, he sounds like the cartoon rabbit with a severe case of vocal fry.” Fonzo isn’t expected until 2019, but it will follow the legendary gangster in the final days of his life.

re: Capone (2020, D: Josh Trank) S: Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy is playing an aging and sickly Al Capone in a trailer for the upcoming retitled “Capone” biopic about “America’s most notorious gangster.”

Director Josh Trank released the trailer and the first footage on his Twitter account Wednesday with a May 12 release date. In a second tweet, he disclosed that the movie will be released on streaming services: “Will be on streaming! Planned as theatrical, but hopefully will be on the big screen later this year!”

The film — which was developed under the title “Fonzo” — is being released via Vertical Entertainment, which specializes in on-demand and home entertainment releases. The official synopsis reads: “The 47-year old Al Capone, after 10 years in prison, starts suffering from dementia, and comes to be haunted by his violent past.”

Capone headed the Chicago mob during the 1920s and was prosecuted for tax evasion and imprisoned in 1932. The trailer contains sequences of a younger-looking Hardy firing a machine gun and proclaiming, “We made a promise that some day we could make it big!”

Much of the trailer shows Hardy as a man with a decidedly unhealthy pallor at a lavish Florida estate. The film also stars Kyle MacLachlan, Linda Cardellini, Jack Lowden, Matt Dillon and Neal Brennan.

Trank, whose credits include “Chronicle” and “Fantastic Four,” directed “Capone” from his own script. Producers are Russell Ackerman, Lawrence Bender, Bron Creative’s Aaron L. Gilbert, and John Schoenfelder.

Darn, I like the original title of this movie better - Fonzo.

Capone in Miami sounds like a good movie.

Josh Trank had such bad press with Fantastic 4. I'm kinda surprised he's getting more chances.

"Josh Trank" is all I needed to hear to know this one is awful - Tom Hardy aside.

Why? Because he had the unfortunate task of working for a studio who was known for butchering their movies?

I don’t think this looks particularly good, but I don’t think the sole disaster that was Fan 4 Stick lies on him.

Well the press made it sound like he was high and aloof as director and cast and crew had to work without the director making decisions.

Yea, I remember reading all the stories. Plenty of movies work with directors who are crazy as fuck.
It seemed like a green director who went mad from studio pressure, influence, and meddling. I still think Chronicle was a good movie, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.

Chronicle is awesome and the closest to an Akira live action film that we're going to get until Taika directs his version who knows when. I have not watched Fantastic 4, but I'll give this Capone film a shot. It's one of those "his last days" type of films. Don't know if folks have seen his face -- he's riddled with syphilis.

That's not why Kathleen Kennedy fired him. He was fired for his horrible behavior on sets. Period.

Pretty crazy transformation of Hardy into Capone. Not sure how interested I am in the film but maybe a trailer will change my mind.
