Nightwatch -- Sony/Marvel

Spike Lee may be getting into the superhero game.

The filmmaker is circling to direct a movie for Sony based on the Marvel character Nightwatch, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Sources say Lee's involvement is early at this point, but that he could potentially direct a film written by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker centering on African-American scientist Dr. Kevin Trench, first introduced in the comics in 1993. The studio declined to comment. The entertainment site That Hashtag Show first reported the news.

Screenwriter Ed Ricourt wrote the original draft for Nightwatch. The character debuted in Web of Spider-Man No. 97, the alter-ego of Dr. Trench, a man who discovered his own corpse wearing a futuristic suit of armor that he went on to steal and wear while fighting crime and trying to discover the origins of his alternate self and his new costume. (Time-travel was the answer to the former — Trench would later be thrown back in time, dying before he could talk to his past self, although he’d later recover — whereas the costume’s origins are far too complicated to explain here.) When not teaming up with Spider-Man, he also found time to partner with Captain America, Deathlok and others before the end of his short-lived comic book series.

Nightwatch is among Sony's stable of Spider-Man-related Marvel characters. In addition to a 2019 Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, the studio also has the Tom Hardy vehicle Venom due out Oct. 5, and Silver & Black, from director Gina Prince-Bythewood, set for Feb. 8 2019. The studio also has a Morbius the Living Vampire movie in development.

Lee is currently at work on Black Klansman, a film based on the true story of an African-American detective who infiltrated the KKK in 1978.

Lee is repped by ICM. Coker is repped by CAA.

Oh boy, I can’t wait for Marvel’s Spawn. But not really Spawn. But pretty much exactly Spawn.

Spike Lee?!?

I can't imagine a director more ill-suited to the task (except maybe Woody Allen).

I always hated that art style.
All the little comb like little teeth things.

Just awful.

Re: Nightwatch -- Sony/Marvel

How come the 90's never produced a Nightblood character?
