Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award (R)-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman's madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the troubled Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters.

I thought the trailers were solid. Hoping for a good ghost story (like we've been spoiled with by The Conjuring-verse).

The Winchester Mystery House is silly. This is literally making a horror movie about a roadside attraction.
The sequel could be Winchester 2: Escape to Car-henge

^ The actual story of the Winchester mansion involves the supernatural so it’s not exactly a stretch to make a ghost story out of it. Frankly, I’m surprised this hasn’t been made into a scary movie already.

And it's directed by The Spierig Brothers. I saw Jigsaw and it was ok but clearly a for-hire job. This looks more like a passion job. If any of you haven't seen their film Predestination then do so - I think it was one of the best films of that year. Daybreakers was also cool as hell.

I haven't liked their past output, but this does have potential.

Damn. I thought this looked good. Now it's feeling like one of those throw-away PG-13 horror movies (which we get a handful of every year). I might still check it out.

I went there on a school field trip when I was in 6th grade. It was boring as fuck. The tour guide tried to tell scary anecdotes while we walked around the house. Basically, she was paranoid and built the house with doors that went no where because she was scared of ghosts. That's all there is to it. Nothing else.

Yeah, even my buddy didn't like it and he LOVED Predestination, as did I.

Setting early hopes for a better film aside, there’s just not much going on in this movie to warrant much enthusiasm. The Spierigs have now followed up their brilliant time travel film, Predestination, with a messy Saw sequel (Jigsaw) and now this unengaging haunted house film. They even brought along Sara Snook from Predestination and Angus Sampson from the Insidious movies (this is a very Australian cast and crew) and found nothing exciting for them to do

Movie is pretty meh.
The house looks great. I would've enjoyed a movie about the beginning of the building of the weird construction. I kinda felt like watching a movie about the Titanic but it has already hit the ice burg. Too many obvious jump-scares does not make it very scary.

A couple days ago Adam Carolla put up a funny fake radio ad for Winchester.
https://www.podcastone.com/episode/A...ith-John-Tabis
It's right after the first real ad.
As the show starts off he briefly re tells his experience at the house.

It was better than we expected. We had fun.

I was initially interested until I saw the reviews. But I was bored one night and went to check it out. The reviews were a bit harsh. I thought it was a good bit of fun. Not a top tier horror film, but still had some decent creepiness and an interesting story. I liked it.

The attraction to this movie was the house and yet they really didn't show much of what makes the house so attractive to haunted house enthusiasts.
Instead you get some lame story about some lame ghosts. I found the movie to be very dull and actually snoozed for a few minutes (not exactly sure how long) during the middle of it.
There was nothing remotely scary about this movie or even eerie. Most haunted house movies creep the fuck out of me for some unknown reason but this movie gave me not one goose pimple.
And the ending...
Spoiler:
Skip this one. My rating is *1/2 out of *****
If they had focused on the real story of the house and explored that more, the movie would have been more interesting (but probably still not successful).

Saw this earlier this evening. A bit dull, considering the history of the Winchester Mystery House.
I found it a bit odd that the film speaks of the sheer scale & confusion of the house's architecture but one of the main characters seems to navigate himself around just fine. There's no sense of (constant) disorientation, which I think would have helped this film tremendously.
Even though most of it was filmed in Australia (on a re-created Sound Stage), I wonder how much of the film was actually filmed at the Winchester Mystery House. I read that at least one of the rooms shown in the film was in the actual house, while others were re-created because they were too small to film in.
