Maybe but NBR has made some wacky choices in the recent past and only three winners of their Best Film award this century have gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar (No Country For Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, Green Book).
Care to guess which movie won their top award last year?

Spoiler:
Spielberg has been hit or miss for me. After The BFG, I lost interest in seeing his films. Maybe WSS will bring me back to appreciating his films again.

This has a good chance to win the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy. Unless they consider House of Gucci a comedy maybe.

The Globes are still happening. Nominations will be on December 13. The ceremony is January 9, 2022 (just not on NBC).

This was pretty stellar. I would say this is 100% a better film than the original (which I like a whole lot). There are a fair amount of changes and I think, for the most part, they are smart and work really well. Some songs are sung by different people and it changes the context. There is only one I'm not sure I agree with. I know why they did it, and I'm not saying it doesn't work... but I think I liked the original way better. Some scenes get moved around. One change they made in the order felt wrong and out of place. The scenes they add bring a lot more depth to the characters.
Not that I am surprised, but I'm glad Spielberg shot this on film. It looked gorgeous.
Between this, In The Heights, and tick, tick... boom, it has been a hell of a year for musical adaptions.

My mom says there is nobody in her theater. Checking AMC it looks like it will be the same tomorrow. I don't doubt the movie will be great but I am afraid that it will bomb.

I'm planning to see this on Sunday. I admit, I have never seen the original. But, I do like a good musical every now and then.
Even if it makes close to $15M on week 1, that has to be a pretty big disappointment. It will drop 50-70% week 2, especially with Spider-Man coming next week. It will almost certainly be a money loser. Maybe releasing a remake of a musical from 60 years ago even with Spielberg as director one week before the most anticipated movie of the year wasn't the best strategy. Yeah I know this was delayed because of COVID and it probably couldn't have been delayed any longer.

Yeah, it’s a complete mystery why an almost 3 hour remake of a 60 year old musical, starring mostly unknowns, isn’t doing gangbusters at theaters that people are still hesitant to go back to.

Don't nobody give a fuck about musicals right now. In the Heights bombed, too. People want escapist entertainment type of blockbusters. Seems that superheroes are the only ones that can give that to the masses during the pandemic. In the next two weeks: Nightmare Alley (will bomb), Spiderman (will make a ton), The King's Man (will bomb), and Matrix Resurrections (may do just ok).

Ernest Lehman and Robert Wise's 1961 West Side Story is my favorite screen musical, period. I saw no reason for this remake to exist.
Except that it's fucking wonderful and people need to see it. In theaters.
I predict this will have legs throughout the holiday season. Remember The Greatest Showman "bombed' on its opening weekend. Until it kept going week after week and managed to become a hit throughout the weeks before, during, and after Christmas. We shall see.

Downey is done with Marvel, but he wouldn't be in big movies today making lots of money without them taking a chance on him in the beginning.

This movie is so so good! I am just stunned at how great it was. How the Hell does Rita Marino look that good at 88?
Loved the opening overhead panning shot. Loved those long shadow shots in the warehouse. Beautifully shot, Looked great. Rachel Zeigler is a total revelation and the woman who played Anita has to be the Oscar favorite, she was great.

Is Downey in big movies today? I know he's going to be in the new Nolan, but otherwise has he done anything in the last few years besides Dolittle? I guess there was that one with Robert Duvall? Otherwise all he's done for the last decade is Marvel stuff.
