Just my thoughts on a couple of films being discussed ...
The Disaster Artist ... I haven’t seen this and I don’t intend to. It has nothing to do with Franco and any allegations ... it has to do with this being a film that laughs at its subject at the subject’s expense, not with its subject. For this reason, it is not a film that should be considered worthy of awards. |

Get Out ... for those who are saying this is a middling genre film, you only watched it for its surface value.

The problem is that the social satire and everything the film does is pretty much on the surface, unless you're really not paying attention. There's no sub-text or deeper meaning that's not obvious. I think it would've worked out much better if they were more subtle and made people work for it.
Also, I went into this blind having no idea what it was about - and I figured out the twist long before it was revealed. I'm not sure if was meant to be so obvious or not. The other thing was the TSA friend - his attempted comedic effect was just too out of place. Everywhere else the humour was much more subtle, but then when he's involved - it gets more wacky. Felt out of place and unfunny. With that said, I still liked Get Out - I just think it's getting way too much praise.

Agree with all this. It's social commentary is unique and engaging but it's nothing revolutionary. It's a decent movie but people making it into what it isn't is just tiresome.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations
I figured the nomination for Get Out was to help the Oscars get some buzz and show they can be edgy. If anything, it might get some minority views to tune in that would normally never check out the show otherwise. God knows it could help the ratings. I don't think it has a chance in hell winning best picture. I would love to be wrong though.

I hope Dafoe gets an Oscar after all the great work he has done over his career and he seems like a cool down to earth guy. |

^ Oh shit! I didn’t even realize that was an actual movie.
Or maybe I did and I wrote that from my subconscious.... |
Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations
Very disappointed Wind River didn’t get some nominations. My favorite movie of last year and I thought the acting was excellent. What am I missing?
Get Out did not work for me at all. The science/medicine aspect took me out of the film and ruined any chance I would like this film. |

The biggest winner of all the collateral damage is probably Denzel Washington,if the Weinstein news came out next month Renner is probably a Best Actor nominee
Renner had zero heat in the awards season for this film. His only Best Actor nominations were from the North Texas Film Critics Awards and the Satellite Awards, whatever those are. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5362988/awards?ref_=tt_awd and if Franco's news came out 2-3 days later then Denzel doesn't make the last spot. That is probably right. |

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations
I'm looking for a split vote again this year, as it's become common recently:
best director - Del Toro best picture - Dunkirk |
Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations
I think BP is a toss up between Shape of Water and Three Billboards.
Director will go to Gerwig. |

The reason Renner and the film had 0 awards presence is entirely due to the stench of Harvey's association with the film. It's not very typical for a studio to spend 0 dollars on a film in the campaing season on a well reviewed box office hit with multiple past Oscar nominees involved in the project. A lot of these critic's award are a bit of chicken and egg scenario where they nominate people who will be in Oscar contention, and since their was no campaign for this it was only gonna get scraps.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations
^ I agree with all of Old Boy's picks except Best Actress, which I think will go to McDormand.
No way "The Shape of Water" wins best picture - too many voters think of it as a "sci-fi movie." If it's not Three Billboards, it's Dunkirk. But I don't think the acting branch of voters thinks much of that film...and rightfully so. It's technically brilliant, but character-vacant. |
